When the door opened her eyes couldn't help but be drawn to it, her heart freezing for just a minute. An older gentleman and his wife entered and she could breathe again. The Christmas party she had planned to avoid was now in full swing, high end society and old geezers every where.

She tugged at her dress, the cut was a little too tight in her opinion, a little too low cut, not at all something she'd have picked for herself. Her best friend had insisted that the emerald, satin, mermaid cut dress was perfect for her and she'd bought it. She'd bought it because he was coming.

Dr. Maxwell Price, object of her most hidden desire, owner of her heart and brother to her employer. Mr. Seth Price, Lawyer and humanitarian.

"Earth to Elizabeth," a deep voice called.

"Hm? Oh, sorry Mr. Price."

"You've been staring at that door for twenty minutes, relax. He'll be here," He handed her a glass of champagne.

"Is it that obvious?"She asked, taking the glass.

"I'm afraid so."

She downed her champagne and handed the empty glass to a nearby waiter. Her hands were shaking as she smoothed them down the front of her dress.

"You look gorgeous, just relax."

Seth Price was more like a friend than a boss, always offering her advice and a shoulder to lean on. She'd been his assistant for seven years now and had recently realized she'd been in love with his younger brother Max for nearly just as long.

"I don't think I've ever been this nervous," She admitted.

"Nothing to be nervous about, Max has been in love with you for as long as I can remember."

"Says you."

"Who better?"

She supposed they were friends, her and Max. They'd had dinner with his brother a few times, they spoke when he came into the office and had danced a few times at different charity events. The problem was he had been married.

He had gotten a divorce several months ago and not long after she overhead him telling Seth about his undying love for her. At first she had been shocked, then later had came the realization that she felt the same way.

"He said he'd be here, you know Max has never missed a Christmas party."

She offered Seth a timid smile and he gave her a pat on the shoulder before walking away. Despite his reassurance and encouragement about Max she still felt nervous. What if he rejected her? What if he changed his mind?

While he had been married Max had never given any indication that he felt anything but friendship towards her. She knew towards the end he'd put everything he had into trying to fix his marriage but in the end it hadn't been enough.

He and his wife were polar opposites, where Max was shy, kind, generous and down to earth his wife had been cold, calculating and often treated people like Elizabeth with disdain.

"How are you holding up?" A voice to her left asked.

"I'm not."

Her friend and colleague Rosa was standing beside her, probably well on her way to being drunk and searching the her nightly conquest. Elizabeth was pretty sure that Rosa was carrying a torch for her partner in law Seth, but never broached the subject.

"Look, he's been in love with you for seven years and you weren't this nervous."

"That's because I didn't know!"
