CHAPTER 2
THE EQUAL OF X

***

I've never been the anti-social nerd, but when I'm forced to sit next to Karma, I'd be glad to turn into one.

Karma is sitting next to me flipping his book's pages back and forth. I guess he's trying to understand what Mr. Tucker is saying, and I'll put another guess that he's just too dumb.

I've been staring at him secretly for about twenty minutes now, ditching Mr. Tucker's lesson just because I'm so smart I don't need any of these. Just kidding, I'm just way too distracted to pay attention. And no, I'm not stalking Karma, I'm just observing.

His dark, dark brown hair is rugged, not in place. But not long enough to block his view. He would run his fingers through his hair once in a while, and he would toy his pen and sometimes drop it just because he's clumsy.

"I swear to God," he exhaled deeply, sounding not amused by the fact that logarithm is something he's not able to do. "June Pieterson, please talk to me."

I glance at him in full shock, afraid that he might have caught me staring, only to find him looking at me, hopelessly in need of help. "Why?" I say shortly, not having any intention for longer conversation.

"Because I seriously need to pass this subject," he rubs his eyes and purses his lips. He was always cocky. I know that he's swallowing his pride to ask me. "Please."

I take a deep breath. Trying to refuse, but I guess I'm just too kind. "Fine." He better not give me any reason to regret my decision later.

The class ends and I couldn't be happier. An instant smile curves on my lips and a heavy feeling suddenly lifts off of my chest. Realizing this, as if he doesn't like the idea of me feeling free, Landon—I mean, Karma, approaches me.

Refusing to talk to him, I turn around and decide to go to the other exit.

Suddenly, someone grabs my right arm, and turns me around to face him. It was Karma. "I know you saw me," he smiles playfully, as if he's trying to make fun of me, but he isn't. "Can I come to your house, later?"

"Are you crazy?" I say, super loudly I almost yelled at him. Thank God the hallway was louder, or else we'll look like an old married couple. Because you know, his hand is still holding my right arm.

"I love crazy," he says nonchalantly. As if nothing's wrong with him suddenly trying to be friends with me. Does he not know how much I hate his presence?

I burst into laughter just because my mind is wild and I suddenly was reminded to the song from the disney movie frozen. Okay, now I'm the freak.

"Okay, but seriously," his deep rumbling voice brings me back to life. "I'm not messing around, I swear I need to pass this lesson."

"Fine." I swiped off his hand on my right arm. Realizing that he was holding it for so long, he lets go of it, probably feeling awkward.

I walk away fastly and as if it seems like agreeing wasn't enough, he walks faster and finally finds his spot next to me.

"Where are you going?" He asks. I cannot believe he's this dumb.

"The moon!" I roll my eyes, sarcastic. "Of course I'm going home." Being sarcastic has always been my forte. At some points, even Chloe couldn't tell if I'm being serious or sarcastic.

He laughs for a moment. Everything seems funny to him, I guess. "Why are you not waiting for me?"

"Why should I? It's not like we're best friends forever," I groan.
