"Well if you wanna be in we gotta hear you play," Jon said to Brendon. We were in Spencer's garage before school. Spencer's mom was surely delighted to see us outside at 5:30 am.

Brent knocked on the door. A little time passed before Spencer's mom opened the door looking disoriented and tired.

"What are you guys doing here?" she asked groggily.

"Band practice," I said.

"Ryan, you know it's 5:30, right?" she asked yawning.

"Yeah, I know, but we need to have Brendon try out for the band," I explained.

"I don't want your loud 'hardcore' music playing at the crack of dawn you guys," she said.

"Please?" Jon asked.

"No."

"Please?"

"No."

"Please?"

"No!"

"Please!"

"You know what?"

"What?"

"Ugh, just go in!" she said letting us in.

"Thanks, Mrs. Smith!" Brendon called through the hallway.

"Miss," she sighed, barely audible, but I saw her place her wedding ring on the granite countertop.

"Hola!" Brendon exclaimed entering the garage.

"Come esta?" Spencer asked grabbing some drumsticks.

"I don't know what that means." Brendon laughed.

Spencer chuckled and handed him the sticks. Brendon looked at them like they were foreign objects.

"What am I supposed to do with these?" he asked, eyebrows furrowed.

"You shove them up your ass." Jon said sarcastically. Brendon twirled them.

"You know, all these years I thought I used them for the drums. Silly me." Brendon shook his head.

Him and Jon sounded so serious even though they weren't. It was actually entertaining.

"We want you to try playing everything you said you can do," Spencer explained.

"Sounds good," Brendon said then sat down at Spencer's drum set.

Brendon started to sing Sophomore Slump Or Comeback Of the Year.

"Are we growing up or just going down

It's just a matter of time until we're all found out

Take our tears and put them on ice

'Cause I swear I'd burn this city down to show you the light

We're the therapists pumping through your speakers

Delivering just what you need

We're well read and poised

We're the best boys

We're the chemists who've found the formula

To make your heart swell and burst

No matter what they say, don't believe a word

Cause I'll keep singing this lie if you'll keep believing it

I'll keep singing this lie

I'll keep singing this lie
