Chapter 1
“Melody! Get up sweetie; it’s your first day of school!” I hear Emma call from downstairs.
School… That one word took a while for my brain to process. When it finally did, I shot up out of bed like the sheets were on fire.
I’ve never been to a real school before. I was home schooled before I met Emma and Tom. And saying I am excited was a huge understatement. I couldn’t start school until today; it really started two months ago. Meaning it’s already Fall, my second favorite season.
I walk to my stereo and turn up the music and start dancing while walking to my bathroom. I strip from my PJs then turn on the shower and feel the nice warm water splash against my body. I normally listen to music while taking a shower, occasionally singing along. It calms me and it has become a routine for me. Once I’m done taking a shower I step into my room with my towel wrapped around me.
“Okay Melo, first day of school... Are you ready for this?” I ask myself as go to my walk in closet.
New school… New town… New me… I can do this, I think to myself. I put on the clothes I picked out the day before and walk to the bathroom again. I grab my curling iron and start to mess with my long brown hair. After half an hour, I’ve finished getting ready.
I stare back at the girl in the mirror. She’s wearing a dark blue pair of skinny jeans along with a white off the shoulder top, a black tank top peeking under it. Her soft naturally wavy, dark brown hair had curls tumbling down her back. What I love the most of what I’m wearing today was the big black and red letters on my shirt. The letters spelled ‘JESUS FREAK’. I apply black eyeliner to my eyes making my electric blue eyes look bigger and brighter. Thank goodness Emma took me shopping when she took me in, or I’d be going to school in rags. Literally rags.
I sigh happily, put on my red converse, grab my bag, turn off the stereo, and walk out. I head downstairs with a smile on my face.
“Hey Melody, sleep well?” Emma asks as I walk into the kitchen.
“Like a baby,” I answer. I sit on a chair subconsciously tapping my nails on the kitchen counter. “Wow, now that I think about it, that doesn’t make sense. Babies wake up crying and screaming every few hours. Who created that apothegm? It should be, ‘I slept like a bear during the winter” I say to Emma.
Emma laughs and places a plate full of scrambled eggs on the kitchen island for me. “You’re right honey.” I smile at her and thank her for the eggs before eating my breakfast with zeal.
“So are you excited that you’re going to school today?” she asks already knowing the answer.
“I can’t wait!” I say trying to eat my food faster.
“Slow down there Melody. You still have time to get to school. There’s no need to inhale your food like Tom gobbles up cake.”
I look around the room, “Where is Tom?” I take slower bites.
“He had to go to work early,” she answers.
I nod and finish my eggs. I place the plate in the sink. “Bye Emma,” I say ask I walk out of the kitchen.
“Bye Melody! Have a nice day at school!” She calls out as I walk out the door with my new skateboard.
I lay my board on the edge of the road and make my way to school. Tom showed me how to get there, and it wasn’t too far. He insisted on buying me a car, but I denied. “Why buy a car when I can just skate to the school? It’s close anyway.” I said to him. It’s a good way to wake up in the morning, it’s peaceful, plus he’s done so much already.
As I skate to school, I look at God's creation surrounding me. It's the 7th of October and the trees are covered with red, yellow and brown leaves making them look absolutely breath-taking. The colors of the leaves were such a contrast from the gorgeous, bright colors of the flowers on the ground. I felt a light cool breeze hit my face and go through my hair. God's creation amazed me every single day. 'It's so beautiful here' I thought to myself.
I continued taking in the scents and sights on my journey to school, then suddenly I heard the voice of God whisper into my ear, "Help him."
