The tattoo on your wrist is the most important and meaningful thing that your soulmate will say to you, though it may not necessarily be the first.
[Ward is NOT hydra in this one! At all! Like ever!]
[Also the WardMay thing never happened.]
-------------
Skye was twelve when it first appeared. The tattoo on her wrist. She knew that it meant she had a soulmate somewhere out there, someone who would apparently say "Look, I know I'm not that guy, too locked down, too boring," whatever that meant.
It was a strange quote to have on your wrist, but if it helped her find her soulmate then she didn't mind.
------------
She was 25 when S.H.I.E.L.D first picked her up and she still didn't know if she had found her soulmate. Sure, she was dating Miles, but she thought that with your soulmate, you were supposed to feel a spark. She never felt anything with Miles but they used to be fairly happy. Fairly. She was 24 when Miles came home with a sad expression on his face.
"What is it?"
"I was at work today," he said, "and one of my friends, Abigail, said something to me."
"What did she say?"
He turned his head away from her and rolled up his sleeve to show her his wrist.
"You found your soulmate?"
"Skye, I am so sorry."
Skye smiled a sad smile, "that's alright, I want you to be happy Miles, this way we both get a chance to find out soulmates."
"I really am sorry."
"Don't worry about it."
She was out by the next day, living in a van. By choice. Truth be told, she wasn't really that sad about her break up with Miles. He wasn't her soulmate and she wasn't his. End of story.

"What's got you so spooked Agent Ward? This mission at the academy was nothing compared to what you're used to."
"I know, it's just that someone said something pretty interesting to me today."
"Who was it."
He saw that Ward was hesitating, "you can tell me, it won't leave this room."
He sighed, "Skye."
Coulson smirked, "what'd she say this time."
"The tin man has a heart after all."
"What's so odd about- oh."
Coulson finally understood, it was Ward's soulmate mark. Every agent had to have their marks recorded when they joined.
"Yeah."
"Well then you have to tell her."
"What? No! I can't do that. What would I even say? Hey Skye guess what, you and I are destined to be together according to fate. Or something like that crap? That's awful."
Coulson laughed, "you'll figure it out."
Ward sighed, "I could just not tell her!" he yelled as Coulson left his room and shut the door.
------------
Ward was about to tell Skye the next week, but a new mission had popped up. They had to go undercover on a train in Italy. Reflecting on it now in the hospital waiting room waiting to see if Skye would survive her two shots to the stomach and intestines, he realized he probably should've told her sooner. Or made sure that he was the one to go undercover with her so he could protect her. He didn't blame Fitz for Skye being shot, but he sure as hell blamed Quinn.
------------
He kept meaning to tell Skye but she was in a coma for so long, and then the thing with Lorelei happened, and then there was this Hydra coming out of the shadows thing going on. There wasn't exactly an opportune moment. Especially not now, in a storage closet, but he was about to fight and he was very outnumbered, he felt like she at least had the right to know before he died.
"Look, I know I'm not that guy, too locked down too boring-"
Her eyes widened and she interrupted him, "WHEN this is over, yes, let's get a drink."
His smile grew and he faced the door, suddenly she grabbed his arm and turned him towards her.
She crashed her lips into his and he returned her kiss with fervor.
"You said you might die, so, what the hell?"
She rolled up her sleeves and put her hair into a ponytail and he caught sight of her wrist, 'Look, I know I'm not that guy, too locked down, too boring'
He couldn't believe it.
She caught him looking at her wrist with wide eyes and she smiled shyly, "surprise," she said quietly.
He tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear and she saw his wrist, 'Looks like the tin man has a heart after all'
"Why didn't you tell me?"
He laughed, "you kind of got shot,"
"Well yeah, but after..."
He shrugged, "I was scared."
"Wow, the tin man scared of something?"
He smiled and he kissed her again.
"Only scared of losing you."
"Don't die out there, and you won't."
"Can't die now, finally have something to fight for."
She smiled, when they made it out of this and Hydra was gone, it was going to be fun.
