I sat at Ezra's desk waiting for him to get back from work. He doesn't know that I'm here yet, and doesn't know what I need to tell him. My mom is moving again, and I don't think she is going to let me stay this time, Yes, this time. I hear the door unlock, and a single tear slides down my cheek, "Aria?" he asks, walking over and sitting down on the floor yesterday, "Aria, what's wrong?'
"Mom's moving again, and I don't think she's going to let me stay this time," another tear I tried not to let him see.
"Aria, we can make it work, we have before," he said, rubbing my shoulder.
"It's not that easy this time, Ezra. She's moving to Sacremento. You know how far away that is? 2,727.5 miles, Ezra, and that's 2,727.5 miles too far," by now he knows I'm crying. He pulls me down into his lap. He smooths my hair and kisses my forehead. I cling to him, not wanting him to let go.
"We can make this work, Aria, I know we can," I lean my head into the crook of his neck. we're both silent for a few minutes, when Ezra's phone starts ringing. He glance at it, but doesn't answer it.
"Aren't you going to get it?" I asked, reaching to get it for him.
"No, you're what's important right now, it can wait," he said, hugging me closer. Then his landline rings, and he doesn't answer it either. The answering machine picks it up, "Ezra fitzgerald, you better answer the phone the next time I call. I better not find that Aria's there," says his mother in an angry voice, 'Great, just what I needed,' I thought
"Don't listen to her babe. She just need to realize that you're a part of my li-" he is cut off by a pounding on the door, "Ezra Fitzgerald, open the door!" 'Great, the mother from hell,'
"Should I hide?" I mouthed. Ezra shook his head and got up to get the door. I stood up and composed myself.
"You!" she said, seeing me instantly, "Get out!" she said, pointing towards the door. I started towards it.
"No, Aria, stay," he said, raising his hand to stop me, "Mom, you need to realize that Aria is a part of my life now, and you need to accept that," Ezra said, staying calm. I admired him when he did that. If I were in his position, I'd be going off on her.
"Look," I started, but Mrs. Fitzgerald cut me off, "No, you look, little girl, you leave my son alone! Oh wait, that's right, your mom's moving to California, isn't she? That's because I sold her apartment," I stood there, shock written all over my face. Why is this woman out to ruin my life? I sank to the floor, hugging my knees to my chest. Ezra came over and pulled me into his lap.
"You see what you do? This is what you do to her!" he shouted.
"Oh, and I was the one who told Ella to get as far away as possible, so you can thank me later," she smiled, "'Get a fresh start, Ella,' I said. 'It'll be good for you and Aria,' I said. She went along with it, and found a house in Sacremento," I layed my forehead on my knees and almost started crying, but I wouldn't let her get that much satisfaction.
"You're horrible," Ezra said, "Get out. Get out and don't come back," when I heard the door close, I let go. Ezra smoothed my hair as I cried. He tried to soothe me and rocked me back and forth. I finally stopped crying, and fell asleep in Ezra's arms. Sadness washed over when reality hit. This won't last forever...
