memories slipped
and fell down her cheeks
and they reached the ground
and the underworlds.
a shadow slipped in,
and he held her,
as her whole world fell
beneath her feet—
her salvation,
her damnation.
he gave her a sad smile,
and she knew something
was happening.
he was hurting.
his h e a r t was tearing apart
into a thousand pieces
and shards.
it was one day,
he had come
to their secret meeting place,
whatever left of his heart held out,
whole life in her grasp,
and he still made her smile,
her knight in striped chinos,
tattered pants,
and hand-me-down sneakers—
memories that she would soon forget.
after all, it was a only a
