Mettaton had no idea how long he spent sobbing into his pillow, leaving large black stains caused by the makeup from his eyes and lips. What had he done? He almost killers Papyrus. His best friend. The one he was in love with. No matter how hard he tried, he could not stop the tears pouring from his perfectly lined eyes as distressed sounds escaped his lungs. His breathing and quickened and caused his sobbing to become louder and heavier. He was probably only there for a few minutes, but it felt like an eternity to him before a soft knock was heard on his door. His only answer was more sobbing, and whoever was outside his door slowly stepped inside.
It was Papyrus.
Mettaton quickly pulled the covers of his bed over him, not wanting to have to face the pain and damage he had inflicted upon the poor skeleton. He was terrified of his urge returning, as Papyrus was weak and would now be much easier for him to kill.

"Mettaton..?" He asked softly, reaching a hand towards him. He wanted to comfort the robot, despite what he had done.

"G-Go! Go away!" Mettaton responded through heavy sobs. "I-I can't see w-what I did to you... I can't even p-promise I w-won't hurt you anym-more..."

Papyrus gently pulled back the covers, revealing yet another side of Mettaton he had never though possible. He was a mess. His normally perfect hair was tangled and damp from tears, even exposing the eye that the robot always kept hidden. The makeup he would always spend hours on was extremely smudged from tears, black streaks running down his metallic face.

"D-Don't look at me!" The robot screamed, attempting to cover himself once again. "I m-might h-hurt you again... I c-can't control mys-self..."

Papyrus laid his hand gently on Mettaton's shoulder, despite the robot muttering for him to leave, and how he was scared he would hurt him, maybe even kill him.

"It's ok now, don't cry. I didn't hurt you, right?" Papyrus asked, ignoring the searing pain all over his body.

"I'm f-fine... But you a-aren't y-you idiot... You look... Broken..." Mettaton said in a choked voice, before breaking down in tears once more at the sheer sight of what he had done.
It was true.

"It's fine, Metta..." He reached down and began to run his bony fingers through Mettaton's normally silky hair. "The Great Papyrus was pretty pathetic today..."

"N-No you weren't... I-I was..."

"You weren't pathetic, just..." Papyrus began, but didn't finish. "Just don't go psycho again, ok?"

"I c-can't control it w-when it h-happens... I'm so s-scared I'll snap again and..." Mettaton cut himself off, for he couldn't bare to even think about what could happen if his urges returned.

"Please, will you try?"

"I... Alr-right, I'll t-try... Are you... G-going to mention this to S-Sans..?"

"No! I'll tell him I fell and that's why I look beaten up. He'd be really mad at you if he knew what... Actually happened..." He looked down, and Mettaton continued to silently cry.

"B-but I deserve to d-die..."

Papyrus gave a gasp as he heard this, and his words of comfort were cut off by Mettaton once more.

"How... How can y-you still be tr-trying to p-protect me? I j-just tried to k-kill you!"

"It's not like things will be completely back to normal... I don't think I'm going to be able to trust you anymore..."
The minuscule spark of maturity in Papyrus had grown to an all time large. "But... I think maybe you can work hard so you can be my friend again..."

Mettaton felt his heart shatter at the words. "Maybe you can be my friend again..." He tried to hold back more tears. He was supposed to be the mature one. He should have just taken and accepted it. It shouldn't have affected him like it did.

"I-I'm... N-not your friend anym-more..?" He asked, finally turning to face Papyrus completely.

"Well... No..." Papyrus replied sadly, avoiding any possible eye contact as he said this.

"You... You s-still like me, r-right..?" Mettaton's voice shook, a few more strands of his now tangled hair falling back into their place in front of his eye.

"Metta... You know the answer..."

The robot suddenly flinched, as if he had been hit. Tears once again began to stream down his face, but he stayed completely silent.

"I... I s-should have expected you to h-hate me n-now..."

"What are you talking about? Of course I still like you!" Papyrus nervously looked back to him. "You just need to work a little bit to earn back my trust..."

Mettaton didn't respond verbally for a little while. He began to take deep breaths in an attempt to steady his voice, but was not successful, and wiped his eyes of tears with his hand, though there were still more flowing from his eyes, smudging the makeup even more. He eventually spoke up again.

"What h-happens if I do go c-crazy again..? What if I g-go after Sans, or a child... Or Undyne, or A-Alphys or..." He cut himself off once again, as the mere thought of performing those actions just to rid himself of sadistic urges was to much for him to handle.

"I guess I'll just have to work with you on that... But, here, this might help for now." With that, Papyrus leaned over and gave Mettaton a gentle kiss on the cheek. He pulled back, his face aflame with a bright blush.

"Wh-What?!" Mettaton seemed to short circuit, his eyes wide and disbelieving. He just couldn't understand Papyrus's actions towards him. He had tried to kill him, he had cracked his bones and put him through searing pain... Yet, he was still being as sweet and as innocent as he always was.

"Well, you have the potential to be even more than a friend to me. And if I were you, I'd try to flatter me! The Great Papyrus has selected you out of a plethora of monsters to be my favourite, bestest person that I also like! Also, if I didn't like you, I wouldn't have forgiven you this easily... I guess if you don't feel the same way, that's fine, but consider your options!" Papyrus gave a wide grin.

There was a moment of silence before a yelp of surprise escaped the skeleton's mouth as he was slapped upside the head, however it was clear there were no ill intentions behind the action.

"You idiot! I... I like you too!"
