The next day was the day we had to have our private training session in front of the game makers. I’d planned before, to make it memorable for both them and me, but it seemed my mind had other plans. I was infuriated by how I could think of nothing but fire girl. I spent the night tossing and turning in my sleep, dreaming about her, and the dreams fluctuated. One minute, I was holding her in my arms, hugging her to me and revelling in the closeness of our bodies, the next, I was plunging a knife into her chest and watching her die before my eyes. I didn’t want to admit to myself which one I enjoyed more because, honestly, I couldn’t afford to think like that.

I’ll admit, I still smiled at the thought of holding a knife to her throat and feel her surrender in my grasp, but the picture of her cold and dead struck me deep. It made my heart ache and that angered me deeply, I couldn’t understand why it hurt me so much to imagine her dead. In the end, I’d be the one to kill her anyway. I felt a little sick and thought for a minute. Suppose I didn’t kill her? Cato would. He’d search her out and give her that cold smirk of his before sending a sword into her stomach. My fists curled and I wanted to march into his room and kill him for something he hadn’t even done. No. I couldn’t let that happen. Katniss Everdeen was mine and only mine, which meant no one would lay a finger on her but me. I stood up, determined, and followed Cato to the training arena.

“Good luck Clove.” He said, smiling slightly. I scoffed and rolled my eyes.

“I don’t need luck Cato.” I told him dryly. He nodded in understanding and waited for his name to be called patiently. I still felt enraged every time I looked at his face. We waited in silence and I figured it’d be the perfect opportunity to set something straight. “Who’re you killing first?” I asked.

He turned to me and looked unsurprised by my question and shrugged. “I think we need to get rid of the other careers first.” He said. My eyebrow raised. That was interesting.

“You don’t want to form an alliance?” I asked. He thought for a second and shook his head.

“We need to kill off the strongest first. The weak ones tend to fight each other and tend to pick one another off, so we won’t have to do much work. As far as I can tell, the other Careers pose the biggest threat. I’m not too worried about anyone else.” He concluded. I nodded, not really caring about his plan in the slightest, I was just pleased that he had no plans on killing Katniss. I didn’t really want to kill Cato, but I’d murder him in the blink of an eye before he touched my fire girl.

A voice called his name and he walked confidently into the room. I sat back and waited for him to finish, so I could go in myself. When he came out with a smirk on his face, I knew he’d done well, but I didn’t expect any less. Cato was everyone’s favourite to win, but I’d prove them all wrong. I planned on winning the hunger games no matter what.

My name was said over a loud speaker and I stood, strolling into the indoor arena and walked straight to the throwing knives. I looked up at the game makers and they all nodded approvingly. I smirked and stood on the line furthest from the targets, releasing a knife from each of my hands, watching them proudly as they flew into the targets, both hitting the centre of the bull’s-eyes. The men all clapped and whispered to each other, impressed. I smirked and turned to appear as if I was walking away. I reached the knife rack, but instead of placing the ones I didn’t use back, I threw them all over the back of my head and swivelled to see every one, perfectly stuck in the targets. I smiled and bowed to the game makers, who were gazing in astonishment. I walked arrogantly from the room and smirked at Cato who was sat waiting for me. He smiled back knowingly and we headed back to our floor together.

We waited a few hours before sitting with our mentor watching the scores being announced. Marvel and Glimmer were announced first and I watched Cato as he listened intently. They both received 9s and he nodded in acknowledgement.
