I pedaled hard, racing against time and people. I was going to a warehouse that was stocked with all sorts of food, perishable and nonperishable alike. I know that stealing is wrong but under these circumstances, no one can blame me. "No one is going to make any kind of profit off of these anyway, so it's not like I'm going to the cash register and taking money." I consoled myself with that thought and pulled my breaks. I got down off of the bike, unstrapped Norah and hid the bike in some bushes. We walked over to the warehouse door, which had no door handle but was the sort that slid upwards. It had a rusty padlock keeping it shut.
I looked around in search for something I could bash through the lock with. My eyes came to rest upon a small shovel. "That'll do."I muttered. "What honey?" Norah asked. She always called everyone 'Honey.' It was the cutest thing. "Nothing" I called back. I grabbed the shovel and marched purposefully toward the door. "Stand back Norah." I said. I readied myself and gave the lock a hefty blow; Nothing. "Eva?" Norah said. "Not now honey." I responded. I kept whacking; again and again I pounded the lock, but to no avail. I raised my shovel yet again to strike another blow, when a hand grabbed mine, stopping me. I whirled around.
A girl was standing in front of me. She was tall and looked slightly older than me. Her short pink hair was slightly mussed and she had a small ring through one nostril. She pushed me aside and pulled out a hammer. She took a batting stance and swung hard; the lock split in two. She looked at me and smirked. "I'm Evva Rose."I said, slightly awed. She nodded and stuck out her hand. "The name's Reina. Good to meet you." She motioned for me to turn around. I looked and saw three others, all guys. "The stocky blonde is Ashton, the tall Dark haired one is Evan, and Mr. Muscles is Kyle." Reina explained. "Ashton's our leader." I waved. "Who's the kid?" she asked, "That's my little sister Norah." She crouched down to Norah's height and smiled. "Hi Norah, I'm Reina." Norah smiled. "You have pink hair!" she giggled. Reina laughed. "Yes, yes I do." She stood up and walked into the warehouse. "She's not very shy, is she?" She called back.
We followed Reina into the warehouse and split up from there. I had about half of my bag left to fill. I explored the shelves, grabbing anything that looked like it might last a long trip without taking up too much room. I found where they kept the candy and got some M&Ms, Recies pieces, as well as a couple others. Norah saw the candy and gave me a huge smile. "Oooo! Gimme some!" I chuckled and gave her a package of M&M's.
We all met up back outside. I slipped the slightly bent shovel into my pack. It wasn't that heavy and who knows, I might need it. A thought occurred to me. "Hey Reina?" I asked. "Yeah?"
"Would you guys mind if we joined you? I have a kid's seat on my bike and Norah sleeps soundly at night so she wouldn't be a problem." They all glanced at me and huddled together. "Oh, and I also know a super safe place that we can get in." I called back. I wasn't exactly sure if they all could get in, but I'd cross that bridge when we came to it. They looked up and glanced at one another again. I'd bet my bike that they hadn't really thought about where to go just yet. Ashton came over to me. He looked me up and down. "What are you good at?" He asked. I narrowed my eyes slightly. "Well, I have a higher IQ than anyone in my school and my grades are top notch." He turned back to the others. "Looks like we have our brains. We have everyone but the brawler, but we can do without him." "Or her." Reina added. Ashton rolled his eyes. "Or Her." He repeated.
Reina caught my confused glance. "This is our Zombie Apocalypse team. We have the leader, medic, speed fighter, weapons expert, and now the brains. We're just short a brawler but we can do without them." I nodded, turned to the bushes, and pulled my bike out. I lifted Norah back into the seat and strapped her in. I was about to mount my bike when Ashton stopped me. "So, where exactly is this safe place of yours?" He asked. "I have an Uncle who works at Mount Weather." His eyes widened in disbelief. "No way. You mean the mount weather? In the Blue ridge mountains?" I nodded. He whistled. I smirked and hopped on my bike. I pulled out my Ethernet and checked to see if anything major was happening. People were all talking about the breakout, but no one near us was in danger.
I put it away and pulled out my map. I pedaled to the road and glanced behind me to see if they were following. They were all looking at me expectantly. I checked my map and made a left. I had just started what was going to be a very long, dangerous trip.
