The boy next door

This is my first attempt at writing a proper story so keep that in mind as you are reading and please feel free to comment. Also, tell me if you want more. Thank you and I hope you enjoy ;)

Mia's POV

When I first moved to Australia, I was only 12 and I was having a rough time fitting in. I lived in an area that had mostly adults so I had nobody to hang out with. That was until my mom told me that there was a family next door that had a kid my age. She said that the family was on vacation and they were coming in a few days so I was really happy. I also remembered people at school talking about a boy named Calum who was on vacation. He seemed like he was loved by everyone.

On the day that his family came back, I was really eager to go to their house to see this "Calum". My mom didn't want us to see the family yet because she said that they were going to be very tired after their long flight so i had to wait the next day.

The next day, my mom went over to their house and invited them over for dinner (even though we didn't even have a proper house yet). We still managed to get a nice table set for their family of four and our family of two, plus a bowl for lucky (our puppy). When I heard the doorbell ring I ran so fast that I almost fell, but I didn't. I opened the door the first person I saw was a man who I think was the dad. He was really tall! I had to look all the way up. He kneeled down and said "hello, you must be Mia!" He held out a hand to me and as I shook his hand I nodded. Then he introduced everyone to me as my mom came "my name is David, this is my wife Joy and these are our kids, Liz and Calum".

When is saw Calum face, my first thought was DAMN! I was smiling as I watched him. He had an innocent smile on his face and he looked a bit shy. He was sort of behind his sister. When I was quite there was an awkward silence that filled the room and I realized that everyone was staring at me and Calum. I could feel my face getting red. I think that my mom could tell that I was feeling uncomfortable so she spoke up "it is really nice to meet you all and thank you so much for coming! Shall we eat now!" Everyone said yes in agreement and we all went to the table.

Everyone sat down but I had to help my mom get the drinks so when we came back my mom sat next to Joy and the only seat that was left was the one next to Calum. I was glad I got to sit next to him. When I was done I noticed that Calum was done too. My mom also noticed this and said "Mia, why don't you and Calum go to your room to play some games". We both nodded and went up to my room.

I had a small tv in my room and xbox, i also had my old wii. When Calum saw them he looked really surprised. I was wondering if they didn't have them in Australia so I asked "what? You haven't seen these before?" He said "No, I have them myself but in never knew that girls play video games!" I laughed at what he said because when I lived in Toronto, all of my friends played video games. I knew that I had a really weird laugh but I couldn't hold it in. Calum started laughing too and as we were laughing, lucky ran into the room and started jumping around. Calum ran to him and was about to pet him but then he stopped and asked "can I please pet him!!" I nodded and he pet lucky I came to join him. Lucky seemed to like it and jumped on him and started licking his face. Calum laughed and I began to laugh too.

When lucky was done licking him, we decided to play Mario cart on my wii. I won one game and he won one game. When we were about to start our tie breaker game, my mom came and she told us that it was time for Calum to go home. We both wanted to finish the game so I asked her "can he pleeeeaaaaase stay for a big longer" My mom just game me the look that meant that he needed to go home but then Calum added to it "can I pleeeeaaaase stay for a little longer Mrs. O'Brien?" My mom finally agreed "fine, by the way, you can call me Anna." After that, she left and we began our game.

Calum won with Mario and I lost with princess peach. He was celebrating as I was putting the game away "YEAH! I WON!!!" He started running around with his arms in the air like the soccer players do. I laughed at that and said "who do you think you are, Ronaldo?" Once again he looked shocked "you watch soccer?? Do you play it too?" I nodded and then he asked me the question that I was dreading to talk about "where is your dad?" To him it seemed like an innocent question but to be it brought back horrible memories that I will never forget and just the thought I it made my eyes water. I couldn't answer so I just looked down and pointed up. He didn't get it and asked "In the attic?" That's when I got angry and I looked up at him and looked him in the eye. When he saw that I was crying he looked confused. "He is DEAD you dummy!!!" I yelled and then I whispered as I looked down and started sniffling "he's gone". The room fell silent then I felt arms wrapped around me and when I opened my eyes I saw Calum's shoulder and then he pulled back, but still holding my shoulders. He said "it will be alright" then he kissed my cheek and winked which made me smile like a madman That was when I knew we were going to be great friends... maybe even more
