"Daniel, honestly, do you have to spend all of your time on that laptop?" My mother poked her head into my room with a sigh. I was leaned back in my chair, scrolling through the results of whatever random thing I had decided to look up.
"I don't, mum. I have to attend school in between." I answered back simply. Was there really anything better to do? It had been raining for three days straight now, and my friends were all doing pretty much the same thing I was doing.
She stepped into my room more with a disapproving look. "Why don't you go hang out with Mark or Troye? You've been cooped up for awhile." It sounded like a question, but her expression said otherwise.
"Mum, it's a Saturday." I started to argue, but she cut me off.
"Daniel Howell, either you go to hang out with one of your friends or so help me I will take away your laptop for a week!"
"OKAY! I'll message Someone and go..." I quickly agreed. I couldn't go that long without technology and she knew it. Darn the mothering loopholes. She left the room with a triumphant look on her face while I turned off my computer and pulled out my phone. I logged onto Kik and quickly sent a message to the few friends in my contacts.
DanIsNotOnFire: hey, mother is threatening to remove my technology, is anyone out there?
Markiplier: hi
TroyeSivan: also hi
DanIsNotOnFire: can I hang out with one of you?
Markiplier: sure, C'mon over
TroyeSivan: can I come too?
Markiplier: sure
Good enough for me. I shoved my phone back in my pocket and stood up from my chair. I stretched before walking out of my room and down the hall.
"Mum, I'm going to be social so you won't take away my social media!" I yelled, opening the closet by the door to grab a rain jacket. Mark lived close enough, but it was still wet.
"You better be gone for at least two hours!" Her voice drifted through the hall, making me groan. It was a good day to stay inside, why wouldn't she let me?
I slid my arms into the sleeves of my dark coat and pulled it right before zipping it up. I threw up the hood and walked out the door without another word. I walked through the varying puddles, watching the small ripples from the rain as well as my feet. It was so grey. Guess that's what I got for being born in this climate.
Cold and rain.
I spent the two block walk to Mark's house with my head down, playing random songs in my head through my thoughts. Most of my thoughts being 'I want to be in my warm room right now'. I only had two hours until that...
I finally made it up to Mark's porch and tapped on the door. I shook some of the rain water off of me just before he opened the door. He smiled, pushing back his bright blue hair. He was one of my older friends, just by a year, but he still tolerated me so that's a plus.
"Dan! What's up? Troye's already here. Same with Shane and Connor." Mark gestured me inside the house, which I quickly complied to. His house was warm and toasty compared to the chill outside.
Mark walked past me, leading me into his family's living room where the others were sitting. They looked up and smiled as I entered.
"Dan! How are you?" Connor asked cheerfully. He patted the empty space beside him and I walked over with a shrug.
"Eh." I replied simply.
"Same." Connor shrugged back.
"So are we waiting on anyone else?" Shane asked, holding a pillow tightly to his chest.
Mark nodded, "Yea. Just Chris."
"We doing anything special?" I asked.
Shane grinned, holding the pillow in his arms closer. "Just a game... But we need everyone here first."
"A game?" Connor asked, "Wait a minute, what game? I did not hear of this."
"Because you were not listening." Troye said with a roll of his eyes. Connor gave him an irritated look, but Troye just puckered his lips in return.
"Just trust me, boys." Shane said slyly.
"Oh yea, that's not something someone untrustworthy would say at all." I scoffed, looking down at my black converse. What game could be so important that everyone had to be present to play? Couldn't we start a round or something and Chris could join in later?
Before Shane could say anything to counter my statement, there's was a knock at the door.
"Chris or pizza." Mark said, popping up.
"Pleeeease be pizza." Shane groaned, falling backwards on the couch a bit.
"Sorry to disappoint." Chris replied a minute later, popping from around the corner.
"Aw, I can't eat you. I'm not desperate enough to resort to cannibalism yet." Shane pouted, hiding part of his face in his pillow.
"Now that Chris is here, what about that game?" Mark suggested after walking into the room after Chris. Shane perked up immediately. He pointed to a black shopping bag that was laying under the small coffee table in the middle of the room.
"There."
Everyone looked between each other, not quiet sure who would make the move to get it. Finally, starting to get irritated by the lack of action being taken, I got up from my seat to lean down and pull out the bag. Inside was a huge box. I pulled it out and immediately recognized why we needed everyone before we started.
"A Ouija Board?" I asked, turning to Shane while holding the game in my hand. "Really? This is kid stuff."
Shane shook his head. "The dead isn't for kids. Unless your childhood was as fucked up as mine." He added the last part while looking up to reconsider his first thought. He quickly looked back at the game and I. "Spirits are no laughing matter."
"Then why is it called 'a game'?" Troye asked with air quotes around the word 'game'.
Shane groaned, tossing his pillow over at Troye. "Because a lot of people, like you, don't believe. But I've seen it! And I thought you guys would like to play."
Connor raised his hand, "I thought you said this isn't for kids? I am six, may I be excused?"
"Connor, you are seventeen, now shut the fuck up and everyone gather around the table." Shane stood up, getting the others to follow his lead. They gathered by me at the coffee table, slowly sitting around it.
"You wanna set up the board, Dan?" Shane asked, looking at the box in my hands eagerly.
I passed him the box, suddenly getting a strange feeling. I didn't think too much of a stupid game meant to scare you... But there was just something about this game...
"Alright!" Shane already had the board out on the table, as well as the small triangle piece. "Are we ready to play?"
Mark shrugged, putting two fingers on the triangle. Chris was next, followed by Shane, Troye, and a very hesitant Connor. Everyone then turned to me, expectantly.
"Dan, you in?" Mark asked.
"I-I dunno..."
"Dan, if you won't play, you can't stay." Shane frowned, "It's no offense, but we want to try and make this work, and that requires full participation."
Where the hell would I go? This was pretty much my group of friends... Not to mention that it hadn't been two hours yet... So home was a no go...
I sighed. Only one option. I reached out my hand and placed two fingers on the triangle.
"Let's do this, then." I said with a shrug.
Shane looked excited. He looked down at the board and nodded. "Okay... Let's do this."
