I wake to the sound of the blender running. As my mom is on welfare, we only had enough money for a second hand blender and two second hand dull blades. Because of this, the blender sounds like a cow giving birth. To triplets. While falling of off Mount Everest.
I'm aware that being put in welfare is difficult and it's not the easiest thing to take care of three kids with no partner, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.
I groan, rolling onto my back and nearly falling out of the bed. Within ten minutes, I'm fully dressed in my classic skinny jeans and slit tank top. I take little to no time on my hair, just brushing it out and letting it flow, and forget about makeup altogether. I sneak a peak in the old cracked mirror. I look like a zombie.
Sighing, I saunter down the unstable stairs and find a smoothie waiting for me. I take a sniff. Ugh, apples. Holding my nose, I gulp the disgusting liquid fruit down knowing that I'll regret it later if I don't. This will be my only meal until dinner. I quickly slip into my combat boots and grab my bag as Gabby rushes out of mom's room with Nikki close on her heels.
"Harper!" She whines. "You were gonna leave without saying bye?" Gabby is the sweetest thing ever. She's 4 years old and the best little sister I could ask for. But sometimes....just sometimes.
"No Gabs! I was gonna say bye, I just wanted to put my shoes on first." Gabby smiles and planted a wet one on my cheek as Nikki comes up behind her making her classic baby noises.
Nikki is only a year old and even though she's just another mouth to feed, we love her to death. It's not Nikis fault that she was born, she didn't ask to be here. Nor did she ask for dad to pick up and leave. After Nikki was born, dad decided that he was done with the family lifestyle and wanted to go back to his life before us. Mom was perfectly fine with it. They didn't get a divorce, she still wants to be with him. Moms always going on about how good of a guy dad is and how he just wants what's best for us. Bullshit. The scary thing is that even though I should be the one that remembers dad the most, I don't even remember how our goodbye went. I have no idea what his parenting skills were like or if he used to help me with the math homework I couldn't stand.
I pick Nikki up and she laughs as I tickle her belly . I kiss her check and out her back down making sure she's balanced before I walk into moms room.
Mom is sitting in her bed going through a list of groceries when I come in. She looks so peaceful with her ebony hair tied back in a messy bun and her red lips relaxed. She smiles when she sees me and tells me to have a great day. I kiss her pale cheek and dash out of the apartment hoping that I haven't missed my ride.
A/N: This is sort of just a filler chapter, the next chapter is where the story will start to actually hit and stuff. Thanks for reading lovlies! :)
