"How much is that?" George asks. We've gone back to his usual curb and he's got his arms wrapped around me as I count out the money.
"Sixty cents! That plus forty makes a full dollar!" I exclaim happily.
George grins, kissing my cheek. I blush. "How much more do you need?"
"Four dollars."
"You know, you never told me what you're needing this money for," he raises an eyebrow.
I giggle. "It's a surprise."
"Oh, is it?"
"Mhm. I should probably go though, before Mother finds me gone."
"Eleanor..." I get up to leave, but George grabs me by the arm and spins me around so I'm facing him again.
"What?"
"I don't want you going back to that woman."
I sigh. "I have to, George."
"But..."
"But what?"
George falls silent.
"George, please! Don't do this to me. But what?"
"I...I feel completely and utterly useless."
That's the first time I see George cry.
