It was Father's Day, and Princess Amber and Prince James were both looking forward to spending the day with their father, King Roland II—especially Amber, but she didn't know that somebody was going to join them.
Amber was rushing down the hallway to give Roland his Father's Day gift when she bumped into Queen Miranda on the way.
"Sorry, Mother," Amber said.
"Where's the fire, Amber?" Miranda laughed.
"It's Father's Day, and I just picked out this golden watch for Daddy," said Amber. "He's going to love it. Daddy, James, and I are going to do something special for Father's Day this year."
"That's good Amber," said Miranda. "But you should know—"
"That Daddy is waiting for me?" Amber interrupted. "Right! I'd better get going. See you later, Mother." She took off to find Roland.
"I hope she knows that a certain someone is joining them," Miranda said, feeling a little worried.
Amber made it to Miranda and Roland's bedroom. "Daddy, happy Father's Day!" she cried. But then she saw that her little sister, Sofia, had already given him a hand-painted flying derby painting.
"Thank you, Sofia," Roland said. "I love it. You must've worked really hard on it."
"I did," said Sofia. "It took me hours to draw the picture and two weeks to paint and put extra coats of paint to make it look solid."
"Wow, that's a lot of work you did," said Roland. "Thank you, honey."
Amber became jealous when Roland hugged and kissed Sofia. James came in with his own Father's Day gift for Roland, but when he saw the flying derby painting, he stopped himself.
"Wow, awesome job, Sofia," said James.
"Thanks, James," said Sofia. "What do you have there?"
James handed Roland a little blue box, and inside was a pin. "Oh, thank you, James," said Roland.
"Wow, it's beautiful," said Sofia. But Amber was too jealous of Sofia to even think about James's gift for Roland.
"What's that, Amber?" Sofia asked.
Amber handed Roland the little box, and Roland was surprised to see the golden watch Amber had picked out.
"Amber, this is amazing," Roland said. "Thank you." Amber was happy that her father liked her gift, but she was still upset with Sofia for giving him a gift too—and a bigger one at that.
"Amber, James, I've invited Sofia to join us for Father's Day this year, and she's got a whole day planned for us," said Roland.
James was excited—but not Amber.
"You invited Sofia, and she's planned the whole day?" Amber asked.
"Yes, and yes," Roland said.
"I hope you don't mind, but we're going to spend Father's Day in another kingdom with two good friends and their father," said Sofia.
"That sounds like fun," said James.
But Amber was less than excited about this.
"We're going to another kingdom?" Amber asked.
"Yes, it'll be fun," said Sofia. "Well, I hate to spoil the surprise and give hints, but you should pack your gym clothes." She went back to her bedroom to pack her gym clothes.
"Sofia is joining us for Father's Day?" Amber asked. "But, Daddy, it's only supposed to be the three of us: you, me, and James."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Amber, but I'm not just your father anymore," said Roland gently. "I'm Sofia's father now too."
"Sofia has to share Mom with us every Mother's Day, and that means we have to share Dad with Sofia every Father's Day too," said James. "It's only fair. This is her first time actually celebrating Father's Day, and with us."
Amber knew that she had to share Roland with Sofia, but she still wished it were the three of them again.
