Austin and i woke up to an empty house. We walked around looking for our father, but he was gone. The horrifying thing was there was blood everywhere throughout the house. trails and drops in the hallways. Splattered all over the cabinets and counters. Austin followed one trail holding his nose. a horrible smell reeked from the garage. after opening the door i had wished we didn't. Four neighborhood dogs hung from hooks. They were skinned and gutted. Blood flooded the floors and their organs were littering the ground. Austin hurled into a bucket. As he did, a scream slipped through my chest. written behind the dog corpses was a message. JOIN OR DIE. I pulled my brother from the garage and took him outside for fresh air. Once again i wished i didn't. the whole neighborhood was trashed and few people ventured outside. Austin finally calmed down and we walked over to a young woman picking up her yard work that was trashed.
" what happened here!?" i didnt mean to sound crazy but i sounded it. She shook her head and threw what she had in her hands to the toren grass. " thoughs god damn messed up Angrys tore apart everything! And your father took my dogs! I knew what he did to them too!' she waved her finger at me. " and i dont want to see it! He killed them!" she took a breath. " the Angrys are making a gang, if you dont join they kill you....We found six dead this morning" she walked away from us. Austin looked tirrifed.
We couldn't leave the house a bloody mess so we spent most of the day cleaning. Austin couldn't stomach the dogs. It took me an hour to unhook them. Picking up the organs was what disgusted me the most. I took the hose and washed the blood out to the grass and driveway. my father's car was ,of course, gone. I wondered who made the gang and how my father joined. What would happen if he returned home and found out we didn't want to join? Would he kill us? Gut us like dogs? Or will he just turn and leave? find mercy in himself and keep us alive? I knew for sure that my father was mentally gone now. He has lost all of what he was.
Trenton arrived after we were done cleaning. both of his parents joined the gang and left him. I was his only safe house. Not truly a safe one if you ask me. " will your dad come back?" Trenton said sipping at his glass of water. The three of us sat the table eating what was left of the food in the house. i sat quietly and shook my head " i don't know." Austin took a bite of his sandwich. " do we still have that gun taped under the drawer?" i shot a look at him. My nerves were on edge. " yes why" i snapped. He scowled. " so i can make sure no one hurts us." his face untensed and he rolled his eyes. I really thought that this was no time for him to be getting cocky with me. Trenton nodded. " it could come in handy if someone broke in." i sighed and got up." i'll get it then." i walked into the living room and opened one of the drawers to a dresser. under the bottom was the pistol. i pulled it off and looked to see if it had bullets in it. It was fully loaded. I walked back into the kitchen and set it down. " there..." Trenton looked at me funny. " what!" i said in frustration. he stood up and looked me in the eyes. " don't let this situation get the best of you Layla. stop trying to be all grown up and taking responsibility for everything. we are in this together." he picked up the gun and walked away from me. I looked down and felt another pair of eyes on me. i looked at Austin. "He's right Layla..." and with that i turned and walked away from my brother. They were confusing me. i hadn't done anything to seem in control. I was trying to keep us alive and now away from a gang.
I was scared for my own life...
