"Today will be the most important day of your life m'lady."

"I understand." You sighed.

Today will be the day Father sends you to meet the matchmaker. Everyone has been having high expectations since you were born in such a wealthy kingdom. You were one of third born and bred princesses of the Nise clan.

"Your father has prepared so many kimonos it's ridiculous!" cried one of your personal handmaids. She gazed excitedly at each kimono as if she were a child in a chocolate store.

"Take one home if you like.." you muttered.

"Really!" she exclaimed.

A stern voice suddenly called out your name, causing you to jerk your head upwards. The knot in your stomach tightened as you spotted your father and the village matchmaker entering the now quiet room.  You quickly stood and greeted the matchmaker.

After several minutes of what seemed like an interrogation, the matchmaker disappeared inside another room with your father.

I wonder what kind of man I'll be paired up with? I hope he's handsome

"My decision has been made!" an angry voice yelled. Several minutes past and your father finally emerged into view.

"Father! Where's the matchmaker? Have I been paired?" you excitedly asked. His expression was solemn as he gazed down at you.

"No..However, the matchmaker has chosen a more honorable path for you.." he softly spoke. You frowned.

"I don't understand.." you whispered suddenly terrified.

"(F/N).. the water god desires a.. maiden.. It would honor our family greatly.." you stared at him in horror.

"N-No.. but I'm..I-I.." you felt tears beginning to gather around your eyes.

"We'll need to have preparations made. Return to your room at once." he flatly said.

Nightfall had finally arrived and you sat silently inside your room. The castle had long since been quiet.

I could run away.. No one would notice right away, right?

You sighed and began to pack essential things.

After an hour you finished packing.

"This is suicide," you muttered pulling the door open, entering the empty hall. You suggested going through the gardens would be faster due to the lack of guards. You carefully sneaked through the empty hallways. A loud clanking noise suddenly broke the silence and you quickly hid behind a large shelf filled with what seemed to be alcohol.

The figure finally came into view.

A guard.

Something seemed off though. He wasn't walking as proper as usual guards would. You suggested that he was probably drunk. He passed quickly and you let out a sigh of relief.
