My sister Mary and several other ladies partook in a play in which my character and the King's younger sister were called "Perseverance". We all wore gowns made of white satin embroidered with gold thread and white masks to conceal our identities. Our hair all tied up and even the men, especially the King himself, wore gold masks for the play.
The King's sister and I headed for the top of the supposed "castle", she on the left side and I on the right. The King, who I recognized even in his gold mask, ran to the castle and climbed up just a little, just enough to grab my hand and slightly pull me in close to him. We stare into each other's eyes, he who is trying to figure out this mysterious lady whose hand he was holding.
"Perseverance, you are my prisoner now."
I smiled at him, still holding onto his hand and then quickly escaped his grasp. I escape from his sight and quickly walk down the "stairs of the castle" to meet him. An elaborate dance was ready to take place.
All the ladies and men were all paired up, me being with the King. The men bowed and all the ladies curtsied. We all swayed, in opposite directions and then walked up to each other to take each other's hand.
"Who are you?", the King asks me.
"Anne.....Anne Boleyn."
I circled around him and then take the hand of his younger sister's partner, leaving the King with his younger sister. After the dance was over, everyone returned to their original positions. It was time for all of our masks to come off. I could tell the King was eager to see the face of this mysterious lady he encountered. Slowly, we all take off our masks. The King stares at me and I smile. Claps emerge from the crowd and to end the performance, we all bow/curtsy.
