As we entered the Capitol, everyone looked around at the great walls and beautiful paintings.
"Welcome," we were stopped from looking around in amazement by a voice of a woman, "to the Capitol."
The group faced her.
"I'm Cara Sharp, your new leader." As she said this, I looked back at the boy with green eyes and blonde hair, seeing the scowl on his face, just now realizing how good looking he was, with sharp jaw lines and ruffled hair.
Cara Sharp motioned us all to walk with her, "we have room for all of you," she stopped walking, everyone stopping behind her, "oh, and you guys are not the only survivors." As she said this, I remembered my parents and began hopeful, hoping they were part of the other group of survivors. Cara continued to walk once again, leading us to a large room of beds. It was unusual to see a bedroom in the Capitol. A group of about 25 people stood before us.
"I'll let you get settled." Cara told us, and left the room.
"So where'd you guys settle as the comet hit?" A man from the other side asked.
"The tunnels." The man before replied, "what about you?"
"We were actually the only ones on the underground subway to survive." a woman from the other said with sadness in her voice, "I lost my son." Tears started welling up in her eyes. Although I pitied her, we've all lost someone. As I thought of this, my very own family appeared in my head. I could see my father and mother standing there. I started to realize that they are no longer with them. At least I don't think they are. It's sad to think that I almost don't care that they're gone.
The man from the group I'm in disrupted my thoughts, "lets get settled then." Everyone nodded in agreement.
As we looked around the large room, everyone chose a bed to sleep in. I chose one far from the door. I noticed a boy, the one with a brown hair and a worried look back in the tunnel, looking around for an empty bed. They beds quickly filled up and he ended up in the bed next to mine. He placed his things next the bed and I watched him. He stilled had a worried look in his light blue eyes. He looked up at me, just now realizing I had been watching him.
"Uh... sorry." I said and looked away, and then looked back at him, "I'm Willa." He just nodded, "you don't have to be worried anymore. We're safe here."
He nodded again, "I'm Emerson." He said in a weak and shaky voice.
"Why'd you choose the tunnels?" I asked curiously. He gave me a confused look.
"I saw you in the tunnels... I went there too." I told him, and he didn't look so confused anymore, "why'd you go down there for a safe place?"
"They were really the only place I knew about... I go there a lot."
"Why's that?" He didn't say anything and just looked down, "sorry." I apologized, "I didn't mean to intrude."
There was a silence between us for a minute.
"That's okay." He said finally.
And then Cara Sharp showed up at the large doorway, "ready to eat?" Everyone cheered. I haven't eaten since breakfast this morning at 7. It's now 3 in the afternoon.
Everyone stood up and followed Cara after she motioned us over.
We walked down a few hallways and past other rooms and eventually came to a stop in front of an open eating area. There were many tables spread out and pulled up windows for people to take food. There were drink dispensers and men stood behind the windows to serve the food.
"Each window has different things," Cara told us, noticing that we stood behind her patiently, "well go ahead!" And the group of survivors ran to the window, grabbing trays and plates and were served food. There was spaghetti, meatloaf and a meal for vegans. When everyone was served an entrée, we moved on to the sides. You were to serve yourself the sides. Hen I finished putting spaghetti, salad and a piece of bread on my plate, I sat at a table by myself. Until Emerson came over. I smiled and he gave me a weak one back.
"C-can I sit here?" He asked me.
"Of course." I said with another smile. He set his tray on the table and sat across from me.
As we ate, Cara spoke to us, "I'm sure you would all like to know about your families and what exactly happened, but before that, let's take a tour!" Everyone just wanted to find out of the comet, "once you're finished eating, my assistants will take you on a tour." Everyone nodded in agreement and Cara stepped away.
"So, where were you when all of this happened?" Emerson asked me.
"School. How about you?"
"Home. I'm-I was, homeschooled," he replied, taking a big gulp, "I think my whole family is dead." His voice was shaky and his hands shook as he took another bite of salad.
"You don't know that for sure." He was probably right but I wanted to feel encouraging, he was already scared enough. He shook his head slightly and I sighed.
"Honestly, I don't even care if my parents are alive or dead." I told him honestly.
He look up at me, the confused look back on his face, "why?"
"They don't appreciate me... but maybe their right... maybe I'm not worth it." I shrugged.
"Then why are you a survivor?" A voice came from behind me. I turned around to see the boy with blonde hair, his green eyes looking deeply into my blue ones. He sat next to me, his tray in front of me. I felt a bit uncomfortable.
"If you weren't worth it, you wouldn't be a survivor." He told me sincerely. Emerson nodded, agreeing. I didn't say anything.
"Landon." The boy stuck his hand out and I took it slowly.
"Willa."He firmly shook my hand as I said this. And then he shook Emerson's hand and they introduced themselves to each other.
"You two were both in the tunnels with me... if I remember correctly?" Landon said, his eyes moving back and forth between Emerson and I.
Emerson and I both nodded.
"Why are you two so quiet?" He asked us, and I giggled a little and then quickly stopped. Emerson looked down at his food.
When everyone finished eating, Cara Sharp showed us around the Capitol. I walked with Landon and Emerson, just now realizing how much taller Landon was then me. Emerson was only a bit taller. There was a game room and a laundry room, a kitchen, that only staff could enter, and bathrooms separated by gender.
The tour finished and Cara told us to get some sleep. She would tell us all about the comet in the morning. We all nodded. I was quite tired myself. Emerson and I went to our beds. I laid underneath the sheet and blanket, the only things on top of everyone's bed. I only had my school backpack, so there were no extra clothes I had available. Cara Sharp told us there would be toothbrushes' in the bathroom tomorrow and a sharpie to write our names on them.
I laid on my back, looking up at the ceiling. I though about all that happened today, wondering if my parents are still alive. Wondering what happened to the city.
After a while, my eyelids closed, and I drifted off to sleep.
