Ruby and Sapphire didn't always love each other. The first time they fused was for self defense purposes only, because the situation was out of control. At that time, Garnet looked more monster like and weird than today's Garnet. Eventually as they grew to love each other more and more, Garnet changed to the Garnet we know and love today.
