I heard the words "Ty!! Babe!! Wake up!!" savagely whispered into my ear causing me to bolt upright in panic. "What!? Wh-?!" a hand was cupped over my mouth and looked around frantically for what was the reason for the way I was woken up. Nothing looked wrong in or with the room.
I was in bed with my boyfriend Josh, in my pajamas and it was still dark. My first thought was it had to be like 3am, witches hour, which meant nothing good, especially if my superstitious boyfriend was waking me up. I still didn't understand. It was all peaceful-Then I heard it.
It was something like the sound you make when you tear meat off of a chicken bone, then the sickening sound of breaking bones and slurping. Josh's eyes were dilated in fear as he looked into mine and I could see my reflection in his eyes. He took a hand off of my mouth, got up slowly and closed the door as quietly as he could without disturbing the creature, then turned to me and mouthed the words "We need to go now. Get your bag and I'll get mine." I quietly got up and dressed in whatever clothes I found on the floor. Luckily, both of us were procrastinating unpacking from our trip we got back from. I moved the guitar case from beside my dresser to reveal a machete. Slipping the large blade into my bag, I continued to move around the room as quickly and quietly as possible to help Josh get his stuff together. In my haste, I bumped his dresser something fell off with a deadly dull thud.
I looked to his grief-stricken face and all of the color had drained out of his face and I felt mine follow suit. We held our breathes and listened for the sickening sounds to resume.Squish, snap, squelch...
We both exhaled and continued about more carefully.
Our bags on our backs, we opened the window and what we saw confirmed our deepest fears:
Everything was in ruins. The end had finally come.
All those strange stories on the news of random acts of bloody cannibalism in the streets weren't so random anymore. There were cars on fire, people trapped in burning cars and being eaten alive in the streets, screaming for help, people sprinting from their houses in an attempt to escape the inevitable.
Towards the direction of downtown an explosion went off and shook the whole house. Then there was a bang on the door and a growl followed by more, aggressive banging.
"Tyler, pumpkin, look a me. We have to go." Josh held my face in his hands and looked into my eyes, "Listen to me, when your feet hit the ground, run. Don't stop running, don't get in a car, don't help anybody, don't turn around looking for me or anyone. Just run for the woods. Take this," he said, handing me a small and rather large gun, shoving multiple boxes of ammo into my bag over my shoulder, "if I'm not behind you, know I love you with all my heart, OK?" He tore his dog tags off his neck, pressed them in my hand and closed my hand around them. I felt the hot tears rushing down my cheeks and his lips on mine as I jumped out of the window just as the door exploded into splinters everywhere. When my feet made contact with the dirt, I bolted forward and heard from behind me "GO, GO, GO!!" I started running with my eyes closed but opened them and the first thing I noticed was zombified, disfigured people I once knew, pass me, running towards where I came from.
The world stopped and started to move in slow motion. Despite what Josh said, I stopped running, turned around and watched the huge mob of zombies making their way towards my struggling boyfriend. I heard a frightened neighing of one of the neighbors horses and bolted in the direction of the barn.Using my machete, I cut the horse free of its restraints, and raced towards Josh. I made my way around, then through the mob with the blade and called his name till he saw me and made a mad dash for the horse. Through much struggle, he climbed on. When he was safely on the horse, I whipped reigns and rode towards the forrest that concealed the neighborhood from the rest of Texas.
That was the end of our first night... Little did we know it would only get much worse...
Josh and I both knew in our hearts without saying it, the end if the world had begun, now it was time to run. So much had happened, so much in a one hour.
