She had driven them to the sunken donuts in the next town over, after leaving the hotel.
The drive was painfully quiet, he said nothing, just sat there, checking all the mirrors periodically, she couldn't handle the mystery in the silence.
"So, Owen, who are you?" She asked pulling into a parking space
"A rogue agent"
"O..k? Of what?"
She turned the car off and turned in her seat to look at him
He didn't shift, just sat there staring forward as he answered"A government agency.. It was created by president Jackson, but he hid it, not even the current presidents know about it, it doesn't exist to the world, an invisible task force, they fake the deaths of certain people, train them as agents and use them to eliminate threats without a trail.. They call them selves alliance."
"That doesn't sound bad, sounds good even"
He turned to look at her with a gravely serious face
"Don't be fooled.. Shall we go in?"
They got out and walked inside to order coffee
They ordered coffee and sat at a table out of ear shot from everyone
"So.. Owen? Right? How do you know about it? Alliance" she asked quietly
"I was an agent. But I escaped"
"Escaped?"
He took a deep sigh and looked at her like she was clueless, but she was
"It started off as good, a way for the government to eliminate threats without getting there hands dirty. They could eliminate targets without wars because we are invisible. There's no records of it, the people they recruit and make agents also don't exist. They were convinced to join them the government faked their deaths or they were a criminal on death row, and didn't have a choice, either way the world thinks they're dead and aliance's computer geniuses erase you from all systems so you can't be found. It started good but slowly the leaders of it were corrupted"
"We're you on death row..?"
"I was falsely accused"
"You can have the drive, I didn't ask for all this.." She said sliding the drive across the table
He put it in his pocket and took a long sip of coffee, never taking his eyes off her
"It may not be to late, if they can't find your print in a system.. Wait, is your print anywhere?"
"I just went through a background check that took them, I was going to volunteer"
"Then it's to late. You're in this for the long haul, you need to change your appearance, car, where you live, cloths, job, everything, what's your job?"
"I work online" she said hesitantly
"..you get online and they'll trace your ip address"
"Well I have to make money"
"Look, come with me and I'll teach you how to live a normal life while off the grid, if they ever find you they'll kill you without a second thought"
"What am I supposed to do?"
"Let me train you then you can be on your way"
"But I'll have to always look over my shoulder.."
"Look, my mission as a rogue agent is to shut this down, as soon as I do you'll be free"
"They want to help you. Train me to be you partner."
"You can't..."
"Owen!" She interrupted, "I will fight for my freedom again."
"Yes mam" he said taking another sip of coffee. He couldn't help but see all the work cut out for him
