The gavel echoed throughout the room... it was like the final heartbeat of a dead person. You hear it once and no more.
Courts can be scary places, if you aren't used to them. Lacey Davenport is of course. Having been in and out of the court (due to her mother) since she was 12 she was used to it, but the only thing that still scared her was that bloody gavel. Every time she heard it she jumped it was so final and authoritave.Lacey was asked to go to a summer camp, but it wasn't an ordinary summer camp, oh no. It was Camp Brookhaven, this was a camp made for people just like Lacey, people whose parents are in no decent condition to take care of their children. Their motto is" Live together, better together". Obviously everyone thinks it's a waste of time and money but it was better than going to an orphanage or into the foster care system, but no one knew what you would do once you got to Brookhaven, it was between the city and the countryside so you never really knew what to expect. Well Lacey will know soon enough what waits for at Camp Brookhaven.
She leaves in seven days.
Six days later
Lacey was packing in her Mum's house. Her Mum doesn't care about her. She could leave and have no contact with her mother for a decade and her mother simply wouldn't care. You see her mother is an alcoholic and a sex addict. She will walk around the city street for hours on end with a bottle of vodka in her hand and she would be wearing the sluttiest outfit she could both find and afford.
Lacey was only packing her basics. Underwear, clothes and toiletries. Enough to fit in her small black suitcase, the bus should be picking her up at 9am sharp tommorow morning. Which meant that she would have to be up at 7am if she was going to go for a shower and enjoy her last few hours of normalcy.
The next morning
Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound of the alarm was starting to give Lacey a headache and a really bad one at that. It was 7am in the morning and Lacey felt like a zombie, she stopped her alarm and proceeded to the bathroom. She washed herself thorughly and was out the shower by 7:20am. She dried herself off and changed into her t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms. She wasn't going to put any effort in being the "star candidate" of the camp, but she didn't want to be kicked out of it either. She staggered into the kitchen, toasted her bagel put nutella on it and sat down on the couch and watched the TV.
Her mother came stumbling through the door at 8:30am with a box of condoms hanging out of her bag. "What the hell are you doing up at this time? Get that filthy arse back into bed. I don't want to see your face until you move out." her mother said as she exited the living room and proceeded to her own bedroom were she shouted profanities and said things like " You are a waste of air" or "I wish you did not exist."
But you musn't take a woman who is drunk 24/7 seriously. She soon stopped shouting and fell asleep on the floor half-naked.
The next thing Lacey heard was a horn sounding from outside her home.
