Star Wars: The Force Awakens was really good. Like really, really good. Suffice to say that I've got the space opera bug. I'm kind of surprised that up until now I've only liked Star Wars, but never loved it. It seems like it has all the things I'd like, but for whatever reason the older movies never really resonated with me the same way they did with others. I've always been partial to sci-fi that has a fantasy bend, or fantasy that has a sci-fi bend. That's probably why I like the cosmic elder things that show up in Conan stories, or worlds like John Carter's Barsoom.
Awhile ago I wrote a space opera short for one of Chuck Wendig's flash fiction challenges. The only stipulation being that it be 1k words of original space opera. I originally posted it on my blog, but I'd like to share it here. It's short and was written in about a week, but I was immediately endeared to these characters and the world. This is a setting I'd like to revisit, maybe in a longer form (or as an ongoing series here on wattpad?). I already have some ideas.
