CHAPTER 1

The nightmares always started off differently but it always ended in the same way with their mother going off to a place somewhere far away.

In her dream, Reagan’s mother would be covered in blood from top to bottom and she could only watch and hugged her little brother as their mother hang onto the thread between life and death. Tears rolled down Reagan’s face as her mother took her last breath and soon after, she saw her mother’s soul left her body. She was dressed in a long white gown looking as beautiful as ever without even a tiny cut or a drop of blood on her.

With Danny unconscious in her arm, she watched their mother getting further and further away from them. She cried and screamed her heart out to stop their mother from leaving them but even so she just kept on walking.

After a few meters apart, she finally stopped walking and turned around to face Reagan and Danny for the last time. With a smile on her face she said goodbye and then she was engulfed by white bright light and just like that she disappeared into thin air.

Reagan opened her eyes with her breathing deepened and sweats formed on her forehead. She was back in her bedroom – back to reality. She laid there in bed and took in few deep breaths to calm herself. Even a sleep could wear her down. She turned her head sideway on the pillow to look at the clock on her bedside table. The number on it blinked 6:23 am, just 7 minutes before it would ring.

She sighed as she forced herself to sit up on the bed. She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her chin on top of her knees. Many years had passed and yet the nightmares wouldn’t stop. Her hair started falling like curtains across her face and she wondered how much longer the nightmares would haunt her. No matter how hard she tried to move forward and never look back she just couldn’t let go of the past.

The alarm finally sounded and it was time to start her daily routine. she pulled the comforter off of her and got up from the bed. With unnecessary force she shut the alarm off, moved to her wardrobe and changed her clothes.

After she was done changing she walked out of her room and towards the bathroom. There she stood in front of the mirror and tied her hair in a bun. She brushed her teeth, washed her face, dried it and finally loosened her hair back and combed it through. One last look in the mirror and she left the bathroom to wake Danny up.

Reagan opened the door to her brother’s room slightly and she could already hear the soft snore coming from Danny. She turned on the lights and entered his room with silent steps so as to not startle her brother to wake. She saw the small form of his little brother as he tossed and turned on his bed. As soon as she got closer to his bed, she saw the small innocent face of her brother and smiled. He was one of the reasons that she woke up every morning – the other one being their dad. She sat down on the bed next to Danny’s body and gently she tried to wake him up from his sleep.

She called out his name but Danny only turned on his bed. She tried a second time and this time she gave a small tug on his shoulder. He stirred in his sleep and finally his eyes fluttered open. He rubbed his eyes and winced at the bright lights.

First he would look around to take in his surroundings and when he would realize that he was no longer in dreamland where he fought with evil but instead in his own room his eyes would stop on her face and then in the count of three he would give Reagan his signature smile.

And just like she had predicted, he smiled a toothy smile – with dimples on his face. Reagan couldn’t help but to smile back at him. He jumped up to hug her which made her startled.
