There are hundreds of disparate Na'vi clans on Pandora. Some of the clans, including the Omaticaya, live in ancient trees that are two to three times the height of the redwoods that once were seen in the Pacific Northwest on Earth. The circumference of Hometree is great enough to house hundreds of clan members. The tree has a number of radially arrayed natural hollows, supported by columns which themselves are the size of redwood trunks.

There are four levels of these vaulted spaces which are utilized by the Na'vi: the lowest level, which is a subterranean catacomb amongst the roots of the tree, is reserved for the most sacred rituals of the clan, including Uniltaron. The "ground floor" level becomes the village commons, in inhabited Great Trees, while the third level (second above ground) is used for communal eating, meetings and some ritual gatherings. The fourth level is an open-work of struts and spokes that is used for sleeping. The Na'vi string their hammocks (or more accurately "cultivate" them, since they are living epiphytes) far above the ground and away from large predators who sometimes prowl among the lower columns at night. Above that, the radial spokes continue upward, through the hollow core of the trunk, for over 100 meters until the first of the tree's massive limbs, where the core narrows into solidity.

Geological surveys have identified a large deposit of unobtainium directly beneath the Hometree of the Omaticaya clan, which puts its long term habitability in question.

Unlike aboriginal cultures on Earth, both men and women join in songs that revolve around home and hearth activities, such as weaving, cooking, child-rearing, and playing games with children. Hometree music is less rhythmic than hunting and battle music, often without any discernible pulse. They use a very wide vocal range, often encompassing three octaves (although they do not use that concept). Many Hometree tunes involve overlapping, cascading musical lines, with each performer singing the same basic melody but joining the song at different points, with different tempi and rhythms, a style sometimes referred to as heterophony (similar to a round of "Row Row Row Your Boat"). This style works well to accompany individually-oriented tasks such as clothing repair, gathering foods, and fishing.

Although much of the domestic music is typically less rhythmically oriented, the rhythmic activity in their songs increases during communal work activities, specifically while weaving and during food preparation. Those working often gossip and sing during these activities.

The majority of Hometree songs pertain to weaving, since it is one of the principal communal activities of their daily lives. Weaving occurs in two ways: it may be done on an individual basis, on small looms, with a few men and women sitting in small clusters, or it may be done on one of the giant looms strung between floor and ceiling of the Hometree commons that are worked by six or seven Na'vi at a time. Most of the weaving songs are sung by the men and women working on their individual looms. The topics vary from hunting to gossip to discussions of which male or female might make the best mate (including some songs sung by elder women that have a distinctly lewd character). Many songs extol the joys of the beauty of their world and their people.

During food preparation, as the clan members pound food with their ikut'sey (meal mashing poles), the poles create a rhythmic accompaniment to the women's songs. Each pole, when pounded creates a slightly different pitch, due to their differing sizes. (This concept of combining differently pitched instruments into a group is echoed in the construction of the pole drums called umili jahmka t'rusu.) The workers pound so that their ikut'sey create interlocking rhythms and a subtle melody which is then elaborated by the other workers. The clatter sticks attached to the ikut'sey, although not specifically musical instruments, add a pleasant noise to the mix.

The linguistic style of Na'vi Hometree songs differs from the battle and hunting songs in that the glottal stops and ejective consonants inherent in the Na'vi language are not emphasized. In many cases (especially lullabies), certain syllables are elided together, skipping over some of the harsher ejectives and reducing the number of glottal stops in order to create a smoother, less aggressive sound.
