It had been a month and Carla had made no progress, but Nick and Michelle continued to stay by her side. The doctors had told them that the longer she's in the coma, the chances of memory loss and brain damage become more likely. Nick and Michelle had spoken about what would happen if she woke up, how they would deal with her if she had no memory of anything.
"We'll have to help her remember who she is, if that's what it comes too. Tell her what her life was like, who we all are, what she's been though. Show her pictures." Michelle said, looking at Carla, then back up to Nick who was nodding.
"But after all she's been though. Would you want to remember? If you'd been though what she had and you had the chance to forget it, would you want to remember?" Nick said, and Michelle thought about it as Nick said "I know I wouldn't"
because who would?

It was later that day when the heart monitor began to speed up, not drastically, but enough to catch Nick and Michelle's attention. They both looked at each other, and then back at Carla. Nick grabbed her hands and looked at her, hope in his eyes.
"Come on, sweetheart, open your eyes." Nick said, squeezing her hands. Just as Nick said it, , Carla's eyelids fluttered slightly.
"Carla?" He whispered. Her eyes were completely open and very bloodshot. She blinked a few times before painting a confused look on her face.
"Who are you? Where am I?" Carla began to panic. She then noticed Chelle. "Michelle what am I doing here? Where's Paul?" As the words escaped from Carla's mouth, Nick's face dropped. Paul? Does she still think she's married to him?
"No Carla, it's me Nick. Don't you remember?" Nick began.
"No get away from me I don't know you! Where is Paul?!" She begged.
"Carla?" Michelle interrupted. "Paul died, in a car crash 8 years ago darling. Don't you remember?" Carla looked shocked.
"What no that can't be!" She began to form tears in her eyes.
"Carla, please baby-"
"I'm not your 'baby'"
"Carla, you really don't remember me? I'm your fiancé remember?" Nick tried to make Carla remember, although it wasn't really Carla in there. It was like talking to a stranger.
"I don't remember, I-" Carla said, and looked at Michelle.
"It's okay. You will, just believe me. You had a fall and hit your head pretty hard." Michelle said and Carla nodded.
"Thats Nick, you're engaged. Okay? It's all okay. Just breathe." Michelle said and Carla began to relax.  Then the doctors came in, and asked Michelle and Nick to leave the room whilst they do some tests.

"She doesn't remember me." Nick said as he sat down.
"She will Nick, have hope." Michelle said.
Not long after, a doctor came out,
"It seems Carla has a block on her brain, causing confusion and memory loss, and in some cases, the block does break and she will remember everything. But, sometimes it doesn't. She'll be ready to go home in about an hour. It seems she remembers up to Paul. That's all she can say." The doctor said, and with a smile, walked away.
"How about you go home? Get some rest. I'll tell her all about you." Michelle said, and Nick nodded. What good was he if she didn't remember him anyway? Nick walked out of the hospital and into his car and went home.

A few later, Michelle and Carla were sat in Carla's flat along with Nick.
"Tell me about what I've missed, I guess?" Carla said, and Michelle nodded.
"Carla, we're going to take it year by year. You've been through a lot, and we can't pile it all on you in one day. So we'll begin where you can remember up to. So let's start with 2007." Michelle began. She dreaded to tell Carla everything she's been through but Michelle is the only one around that Carla can remember and recognize. "You were married to Paul in 1999 remember that?"
"Yeah." Carla replied quietly. I think she was dreading to hear about her life that she once witnessed but recently forgotten.
"He worked in Underworld and you came to join him to work there too at the end of 2006." Michelle continued.
"Yeah... yeah I think I can remember that." Carla said almost whispering with her weak voice.
"Then, you discovered the bad news." Michelle began. Carla looked terrified to know what the bad news was. "Paul had been sleeping with prostitutes for 3 years behind your back darling. I'm so sorry." Michelle stroked Carla's knee to reassure her as tears filled Carla's eyes.
"It's okay." Typical Carla replied, trying to stay strong.
"You then found out that he almost slept with one of your best mates, Leanne, who was also a prostitute." Michelle added.
"Leanne... I remember Leanne." Carla remembered. "So Paul and her didn't... You know." Carla asked once more.
"No, no they didn't. Neither did they want to." Michelle continued.
"After you'd broke it to Paul that you had found out, he got drunk and kidnapped Leanne. He drove drunk with her in the boot and a lorry crashed into him." Carla's tears ran down her face as Michelle wiped each one away. Michelle's voice cracked as she talked about her brothers death but she stayed strong for Carla's sake.
"And Leanne... Is she okay?" Carla wondered.
"Yeah she's fine. Although you two have never really got on well since, for many reasons." Michelle reminded Carla.
"Like?" Carla wanted to know why her and Leanne were on such bad terms.
"Like I said darling, let's just take it year by year." Michelle reminded her. "And this is only the beginning sweetheart." Michelle added stroking Carla's hair.
"Hey wait. When did we become best mates? As far as I can remember you couldn't stand me back then." Carla asked.
"I've grown to love you. Like a lot of people have." Michelle smiled.
"Like me." Nick added. Carla gave Nick a small smile and he gave one to her in return.
