As I walked to her house, my mind was swirling with thoughts of home, school, work, the party and other things. I knew I had arrived at her house when I saw cars parked all over the drive, and people drinking and partying all over the place. As I went in, people I knew stopped to say hi, and others I’d met greeted me too. I mean, I wasn’t a nerd, or a loner, nor a jock, but I had a bit of a reputation as a bad boy. Personally, I tried to be as cool as I thought I was, and it seemed to work. People knew me.
I saw Claire almost immediately, and decided to scare her by surprising her from behind. “Hey.”
She jumped and turned around. “Jezz… You scared me.” She hit me playfully.
I grinned back, trying to play it cool, but my insides had turned to butterflies. “That’s what I wanted… Anyway, why are you on the couch when you’ve got a party going on?”
Her eyes twinkled. “I was waiting for you, silly.”
“And why was that?” I asked, curious now. And hopeful.
“Well, I was hoping to get to know you better…” her voice trailed off as I casually leaned back, acting like it was nothing.
“Sure. What do you want to know?”
“Not here.” She took my hand and stood up, leading me outside. We pushed through the crowd and went outside, into her back yard, which was surprisingly empty. She sat down on a small porch swing, and gestured that I occupy the space next to her. I did, and we sat in silence for a moment, swinging, each waiting for the other to start talking.
She began. “Tell me about you. Your family.”
I turned away, uncomfortable with the topic. I mean, how do you tell people that your father is a drunk? She sensed my discomfort though, and squeezed my hand.
“What do you do in your free time?” she asked.
I looked at her, and our eyes locked. For a moment I was speechless, then my voice returned. “Well… There’s work, then… I take long walks, I suppose…”
She interrupted me with a light kiss. I almost didn’t realize it as her soft lips brushed mine, and it was only a brief second, gone before it had registered in my mind. I looked at her, searching for a reason.
“What was that for?” I asked, confused.
“Coz you’re cute.” She tapped my nose lightly. “Come on, let’s get back to the party.”
She left me there to think, and went back in. I was slightly shocked, but soon recovered, passing my fingers over my lips, reliving the moment over and over. Then I shook my head, cleared my thoughts and headed back, putting on my bad boy mask again.
Inside I saw Claire dancing, so I grabbed a beer and joined her, flirting as we moved. She gave me a quick smile, and the rest of the evening went well. Later, before I had to go, we shared another kiss, not as sweet as our first, more like a quick peck. I was a bit drunk, and didn’t try to go for more, and she could probably tell. Just as well.
It was a long walk home, however, and I had nothing better to do than think, so that meant that my mind was twirling around Claire. The trip back home passed by quickly, as I relived the kiss a thousand times over in my head. I had never had a serious relationship with a girl, and had never wanted to, but now I was thinking that maybe, with Claire, I could make an exception.
As I got home I tried to be quiet, without too much success. The door slammed as I closed it, and I cursed as I tripped over something in the dark. Not that that would wake up anyone. Katie should be dead to the world by now, being past midnight, and my father had never woken up before eight in the morning. I just couldn’t wait to get to bed, and grab some sleep before tomorrow. As I slipped under the covers, though, I felt someone already there.
As I turned on the light I saw it was Katie, and she was awake, staring at me.
“What are you doing in here, Katie?” I whispered.
“I was scared, Bubby, but you weren’t here.”
“Sssssh… I was doing homework with a friend.”
I turned off the light, and hugged my baby sister. “Come on, let’s go to sleep.”
“Sorry Bubby. I didn’t want to scare you.”
“Of course not. Now sleep, Katie.”
I fell asleep almost straight away, my head already pounding from a hangover that was going to kill me in the morning, my last thoughts full of anger with my father, affection for Katie and confused about how I was going to face Claire when I saw her next.
Boy, does life suck.
