“They rapped a girl and then killed her?” April whispered in shock. She tried to keep a straight face throughout Harry’s story, but she couldn’t keep the repulsed look off of her face. Horror seeped into her voice as he vividly described the girl’s death. “Because of you?”
Harry dipped his head low and nodded slowly. “I know I don’t care about anyone’s emotions other than my own and I’m okay with that. It keeps my conscience at bay, but I can’t be okay with them killing this girl. She did nothing wrong. She was just an innocent girl walking home from the movies. This is not something I can brush off because her death is on my shoulders and I didn’t even do it,” he said distressed.
“What the fuck are you talking about? You did have something to do with it,” April declared. “You had everything to do with it. I have seen your ‘boys’ following you around constantly and falling over your every word—partly because they are scared of you and partly because they want to be you. You should feel bad about this girl’s death because if they weren’t trying to be just like you then this wouldn’t have happened. I don’t even know what happened at that bank but I know that eventually you and Zayn are going to have to face up with what you guys did and that man’s death.”
Harry jumped up from the tree trunk and stared down at April, incredulously. “Who the hell do you think you are, bitch, to talk to me like that?” he yelled. He hated that she could actually make him feel bad and actually face up to his actions. Who was she to think she could just comment on his life and that be okay? He thought, outraged. Normally he would have just slapped her or punished her in some kind of way for saying anything like that to him, but he just felt upset and hurt by her words, which scared him even more.
“I can talk to you however I want,” she yelled back. “I am not some little girl that you seem think I am. I have thoughts and I have opinions and I’m going to voice them, just because you don’t want to hear them, doesn’t mean I have to keep them to myself. By the way, don’t talk to me like that again.”
He raised his eyes and stepped back, chuckling softly. “You are giving me commands? The boy who kidnapped you?” he asked. “Does that make sense at all to you? Have you forgotten what’s going on here?”
“Does any of this make sense?” she asked, rolling her eyes. “This whole thing is a mess and it’s not normal and it’s crazy and you’re fucking out of your mind and a killer and bank robber apparently and you’re in charge of the unmanageable gang back home.”
He ranked his hands through his greasy curls. He needed to take a long shower and just let this whole experience settle in, but that was not going to happen for a really long time from the looks of it. “Will you stop talking to me like that?” he asked, softly.
“Like what?”
“Like everything about me disgusts you,” he said, turning away from her, rubbing his face with his hands.
April cursed herself as she got up from the tree trunk and walked towards him slowly. She had no clue what she doing, why she was here, and why she felt the need to comfort him. She just felt some sort of connection to Harry that she could not shake for the life of her. She crept softly across the damp grass and came up behind him. She felt her hands shake as she reached out to touch his broad, strong shoulders. “Harry,” she said quietly. “I can’t say that what you’ve done hasn’t disgusted me because it has. It makes part of me scream ‘GET AWAY FROM HIM. HATE HIM. HATE HIM’ while the other part of me wants to help you. I would even say that I am beginning to care about you, despite the fact that I am being held here against my will. I just want to you to grasp what all you’ve done and what you’re continuing to do. I want to you to feel the guilt that you should feel so maybe you’ll change.”
