Very quietly I walked into the room where Owen was being treated. He was still asleep so I silently took a seat next to him on the small white bed. I looked down at his bare chest wrapped up around his rips which were most likely bruised or broken from falling out of the rolling van. His darker brown wavy hair was sweaty and stuck to his dirty face. I reached over and took a small cloth from the miniature table beside the bed. I walked to the sink and dampened it. Then I took my seat by Owen once more, this time placing the rag on his forehead, wiping the hair out of his face and cleaning the dry blood and dirt off of him.
After a moment his eyes fluttered open and soon fell on me.
"Hi," I smiled showing my naturally straight teeth to the tired boy before me.
"Hi," he responded in the same manner. There was a moment of silence where we stared into each other's eyes and didn't care to look away. However, my smile soon faded as my eyes traveled down the rest of his muscular, beaten body.
"Um," I stumbled for words, "How are you?"
He did not reply right away, but took my hand and looked at my wound. The bandages wrapped around both my shoulder and thigh were almost completely red with blood and I knew they would have to be changed soon.
"I'll live," he chuckled only to catch his breath from the pain.
"That's not funny," I stated sternly. My head dropped and for the first time tonight a tear escaped my eye. Owen stopped himself and froze. It had been four years now that we had all worked together as a team and I had controlled my tears since then. I had only cried few times and that was usually in front of Mark and no one else.
Owen's eyes remained wide and he struggled for words. Unfortunately or fortunately, I wiped the other tears in my eyes away before they could emerge. I took a deep breath and held my head up high.
"I'm just uh- I'm," I stopped and looked around seeing one of the few actual doctors we have here in the far corner of the medical room, "I'm gonna see if I can get some pain killers for all this." I fakely smiled and pushed myself off the bed, giving Owen's leg a quick pat before getting up and leaving.
Once I was a good distance away from him I let out a sign of relief and never turned back. After retrieving my medication and having the bandages changed on my wounds I retreated back to my room in which I shared.
No, not with another girl but with the only person I felt comfortable sharing a room with considering there are no other girls on the team. There are were three rooms and two beds in each room, all of which were bolted to the wall, distributed to our team. I being the only girl was forced to share with someone from the opposite gender. Wisely I chose Mark and I think that has made us even closer. We know more about each other than people who are friends like us should know. Nothing too revealing but more personal things that boss would say prohibits us from doing our job the right way; with out distractions and too much concern for one another.
I do not believe that holds us back but helps us to work even better together. I can't really explain how it does but it does.
I got to my room and took a seat on my bed. Mark had yet to come in for the night. He was probably sitting in the lounge with some other guys, just chatting and laughing drinking their sodas. It was always funny to me how Boss never let us drink, I use to think he kept it all for himself. But after this one incident I know better.
Me and Seth had been bored one day, just sitting around after he finished his workout. I didn't do much of one, just some weights and jogging. The rest of the guys were still in the middle of theirs when me and Seth had come up with something to do.
