Chapter. 1

I'd like to think that on the first day of college, I would be that girl who was absolutely prepared. The one who has her entire schedule memorized, books organized and outfit ready.

I am not that type of girl.

No. I am the girl who is currently halfway on the bed and halfway in the floor in a mess of sheets and tangled hair.

"Elina! Wake up!! We're going to be late if you don't get your lazy butt moving. Need I remind you it's our first day? Move!!"

And that would be Maria. Been my best friend since we wore diapers.

Remember that girl that I'd like to think I am but I'm not? Maria is that kind of girl.

"You're gonna have to bribe me with food if you wanna get me out of this bed." I groan.

She laughs, "You're barely in the bed at all! Come on lazy, I'll fix pancakes since I'm already ready." She walks out with an eye roll.

I flip her off.

Grumbling, I slowly crawl the rest of the way out of bed and drag my feet to my bathroom.

Maria and I decided to go ahead and buy a small house close to campus. Her parents are wealthy and insisted to pay for it all. I'm like a second daughter to them. Maria's twin brother Kanen lives with us too.

Flicking on the light, I glance in the mirror and groan. I look like Chewbacca from Star Wars. My dark brown hair is sticking out in every direction and dried slobber is still on my chin. Sexy.

I quickly shower and put on a cute but casual outfit that seems fitting enough for the first day. I apply a small amount of makeup, making my blue eyes stand out. I curl my hair loosely and make absolutely sure I had used deodorant.

Hey, we all forget sometimes right?

I slip on my grandmothers ring like I do every day. It's a small golden stone set on a gray stone band. She gave it to me before she passed away, saying that it was a very special ring. I make sure to always wear it.

I grab my bag and trudge down the stairs. Kanen sat on a bar stool eating my pancakes.

"Um, excuse me sir? I believe that's mine." I say and swat his hands away from my plate.

"Calm down El, I made plenty!" Maria laughs and shakes her head.

"You know I take my food seriously, Maria." I say through a mouthful of pancake.

"Aw c'mon Ellie, remember sharing is caring." Kanen teases.

"You know Maria was always my favorite twin." I smirk and eat the last bite with emphasis, causing him so pout.

"Kay guys, we need to head out if we're gonna get to our classes in time." Maria says and grabs her bags.

The university was very close to the beach and palm trees were on every corner. We had decided we would walk to class when it's warm since campus isn't too far away. Our first classes start at the same time.

I'm studying to become a marine biologist and I'm heading to Biochemistry with Dr. Stevens.

Maria is majoring in English and aspiring to be an editor for a publishing house that I forgot the name of. Kanen is a Business major.
