My alarm began buzzing at 5 in the morning. I quickly woke up, it was time for Grams' meds. I walked into the kitchen and filled my hand with her individual pills and a glass with water. I walked into her dark room. I sat the pills and water on her bedside table. I walked to the window and opened the curtains, the low sun light lit the room.

"Grams, it's time for your medicine." I said. She didn't make a peep. "Come on Grams, you can go to sleep after you take this." I took her hand in mine. It was cold and fragile.

"Grams?" I asked. Her body was lifeless. I quickly shifted to check her pulse. I felt in her neck first, I couldn't find one. I moved to her wrist hoping I could find it better. There was still nothing. She wasn't breathing and her skin was stone cold. I quickly darted to my room where my phone was sitting on the floor. I dialled for emergency assistance.

I was on the phone with the woman until the ambulance arrived. I let them into the house. They tried to bring her back. I leaned on the wall in her room watching them shoot electricity through her lifeless body.

I drifted into a state of shock and horror. "Miss?" a man asked breaking me from my solitude.

"Yes?" I asked. My voice sounded shockingly high and helpless.

"We can't bring her back." he said. I nodded lightly in response. "Are your wishes to preserve or cremate her?"

I looked at my feet trying to think back to what she had asked me to do. "Preserve." I said lifelessly.

He nodded. "I can help you get that set up." he said. I'm sure he noticed I had no idea what to do.

I nodded. He walked away for a while and then came back with some papers for me to sign. Once they where signed everyone left, taking her with them. I followed them out to my door and shut it behind them. Leaving myself alone in my empty living room. I still held my phone in my hand. I looked down at the screen, that had a photo of Phil and Grams on it. I began clicking numbers and deleting them. I finally got my dad's number and hit the call button. I held the phone up to my ear, the ringing sound filled my ears. "Hello this is Matt." he answered.

"Hi dad." I stuttered out.

"Hey Scarlet, how's it going?" he asked.

"Um, Grams passed in the night." I said softly.

"Oh. Did you get it all taken care of?" he asked.

"Yeah." I almost asked.

"Alright. I can be there this weekend if you can get that all set up. The funeral and all." he said.

"Sure." I said.

"Thanks. Well I'll talk to you later." he said making everything sound like business.

"Kay. Bye." I said flatly. He quickly hung up the phone. I felt alone and useless.

I slowly turned around, Dan was standing in my door way. "I heared sirens. Are you okay?" he asked. His hair was everywhere and he was in sweat pants.

I shook my head, holding back tears. He walked into the apartment, shutting the door behind himself. He walked up to me and wrapped his arms around me. "I'm so sorry." he said.

I held back tears but I didn't let him go. I stood and hugged him for what seemed like an eternity. He then walked over to my couch with me and sat down. I felt obligated to sit down next to him. I pulled my knees up to my chest. Dan was simply looking at me like he didn't know what to do or say. I looked up into his chocolatey eyes. "I'm sorry about last night." I said.

He gave me a half smile. "Me too." he said lightly.

I shook my head "You shouldn't be." I said.
