We'd been on the road for about forty five minutes now and Jack had been fast asleep in the backseat.
"You know where we are?" Agler sat in the passenger seat and questioned.
"We just entered Rye Brook, New York." I kept my eyes forward as I steered through the quiet roads. I knew my father advised me against entering New York but I needed to try. I had to save him. Jack couldn't lose a mother and father too especially when I can help it.
"Oh, you know my mom wanted to move out here once. She said she loved the neighborhoods and what not." Agler said trying to pull me out of my thoughts
I acknowledged Agler with a nod but never removed my eyes from the road.
"Hey you know what happened back there with Troy... He's crazy for not believing you."
I inhaled and closed my eyes as we stopped at a stop sign.
"Mai... Come on you haven't spoken to me since we got on this trip."
"I don't really have much to say." I finally responded looking in my rear view mirror and lightly pressing on the gas pedal as the light turned green.
I looked at the dashboard and read the time, 3:45. If we made it into New York, New York by 4:30, 5'oclock we'd have three hours to find my dad and get out of New York.. Assuming mass destruction didn't start till 8.
"Well just forget about Troy." Agler interrupted my thoughts again and I focused on the road once more.
"He's already forgotten." I smiled keeping my inner turmoil secret.
Before we had decided to skip town Agler and I tried to warn our friends and whatever family there that this was only the beginning and that Lily was true in all her power. Besides being laughed at by everyone the one person I thought would stand by my side other then Agler abandoned me. Called me crazy and confused for believing in Lily.
I had begged Troy to accompany Agler and I to California but he refused profusely and called my thoughts of the worlds end childish and idiotic. I knew then that there was no use in trying to change his mind. So Agler, Jack, and I left leaving Troy and everyone in Ridgefield, Connecticut behind.
I also felt bad for Aggs, he'd tried to persuade his parents in coming but they only laughed and took pity on our 'young minds'. I remembered their amused remarks: "Oh, I get it, you guys are finally trying to run away together." Agler's Mother, Mrs. Yola Spiros said with sympathy. "Even if the world was going to end there would be no use in trying to hide, might as well die at the place I call home rather than die on the run." Agler's father, Mr. Galan Spiros laughed with hardy humor.
I took a glance at Agler who had stopped trying to cheer me up and opted to look out the window. "What about you and your parents? I mean if you truly believe me and think the worlds going to shit then why aren't you showing any emotion towards losing them?"
"Because my dad made a good point. If we are all going to die he chose a good place to die, at his home with my mother. That's where he needs to be; I on the other hand feel as though I need to be here... Helping you and Jack figure this whole thing out. And besides once we get to California I can maybe find my brother if world destruction hasn't reached there by then."
My thoughts shifted towards Agler's older brother, Paris Spiros, the heart throb bad boy of our town. He was a senior in high school when I was just a freshmen; although I had grown up with him I never realized how attracted I was too him until I entered high school. Girls swooned and chased after him but his then girlfriend Abby Hansson had an iron grip on him whenever she could. It was rumoured that they were going to get married after high school but Paris' cheating ways proved too much for them and they had broken up on graduation day, that was a sight. Paris ended up moving to California two weeks after graduation to pursue God knows what and the only way you can really hear about him now was through his baby brother, Agler, my best friend who'd ride to the end of the world with me.
