It was three in the morning, and Eko was still awake, even though she didn't want to be. There was a lot on her mind.
Every night, she still thought about Avi. They weren't dating, but lots of people thought they were. And not to mention what happened on New Years. So were they dating?
When Eko told her friend, Zora, she said it was the 'whatever this is' stage. "It'll pass," she said knowingly, "but it's gonna be tough and you just have to remember why you like him. Just hold on, 'cause it might take a while."
Eko sighed. She didn't want to be in a 'whatever this is' stage. She wanted to know what they had, if anything, and she didn't want it to be hard. She ran her fingers across her rug, feeling the roughness that was probably soft to some people. She had decided not to sleep in her bed, it didn't feel right. It was never warm enough anymore. So she slept on the floor. It was the only suitable place.
Just then, something hit her window lightly. From the slight bit the curtains were open, she couldn't see anything. Maybe it was just a bird. But it wouldn't hit the window again. At the third tap, Eko got up, and moved the curtain aside, and jumped back, as she saw a face, lit by the light of a phone. She looked at the face again, studying it closely. Her face went slack when she saw who it was, dressed in pajamas.
As carefully and quietly as she could, she opened the window, and let the figure in.
"What are you doing here?" Eko whispered urgently.
"I came to see you," his deep voice said as he embraced her warmly.
"K, but at three in the morning? Come on, Avi, learn some timing!" she said.
He let go of her, and glanced around the room. "Were you sleeping on the floor?" He sounded worried.
"Yeah," Eko answered simply. "It's not that big a deal,"
"Um, yeah, it is," Avi said, climbing onto her bed. "Come on," he prompted, reaching out his hand.
There were a few different directions this could go. Eko didn't accept his hand.
Avi frowned. "Come on, I'm not going to force myself on you, I just want to make sure you're sleeping somewhere that won't mess up your back or something."
Oh well, Eko thought. Whatever happens will happen. She grabbed his hand and hoisted herself up onto her bed. He wrapped his arm around her waist, and they fell onto their sides. Avi pulled her closer, and snuggled his face into her neck. "Try and catch some sleep." He whispered.
Eko wondered why Avi had come to her window. She hadn't told him she was awake, she didn't text him. Maybe he had had trouble sleeping, too? The thought was kind of comforting, Avi not being able to sleep well without her.
Eko fell asleep, with Avi next to her, because finally, the bed was warm enough.
