The cool breeze of the night air glided past Beverly Modesto's ear. It shouldn't be this cold, on this late summer night, but it was freezing. Her grandmother had said it was a bad omen.

Crossing her arms over her chest to keep in heat, she flicked her gaze over to her blonde best friend, Grace Adilida, currently nuzzled in the arms of her boyfriend, the charming Beck Anderson.

Rolling her eyes, Bev murmured, " You guys suck. You all get the heat of each other and I'm stuck here wandering along this ground to the bloody party freezing to death. "

" Well, Bev, If you'd like to come join us.. " Grace giggled and outstretched her arms, her baby blue eyes glinting happily as Beck held her close.

" And you know what I heard? People are saying there are new guys in this town. Maybe someone besides Roger would hit on our purple haired girl here. " He grinned and cast her a teasing wink.

Giving a stubborn scowl, Bev replied, " I don't think anyone would be interested in me. And I only think Roger likes me because of the dye job. "

" You do resemble a bit of a fairy. Maybe we should do that for Halloween! Oh, I can see it now.. Beck, in tights and a Peter Pan cap. " Grace giggled incessantly. Beck leaned down and pressed his lips to her cheek, softly exclaiming , " You wish. "

Beverly averted her gaze away. She was used to them being adorable, and cutesy and in love. It just happened. And it did seem really personal and inappropriate to watch them when they were like this.

In the distance, just over the hill in front of them, she could see the lights of the party, and hear the music as well. The beat softy vibrated the ground. Bev could see lots of people already there, passing around blue plastic cups of beer and dancing on the earthy ground.

Beverly flicked her gaze briefly back to her friends, who were lagging behind and trudged forward. It was the last full night of summer vacation, and then Bev, Grace and Beck would become Juniors.

As they neared the party, Bev could recognize most everyone there. Daina, sitting casually on the ground. Roger, looking for someone, and Bev had a gut feeling it was her. Neida, flirting with some pale haired guy she could only see the back of.  Besides that, they were all people from school with she didn't know to well.

Her gaze returned to the pale stranger for a brief moment, trying to figure out who it was before a buoyant tempered Roger stepped in her path. Roger wasn't unattractive at all, but he' been after her for years. His hair was a dark brown, almost black color. He apparently dyed the side of it red over the summer. His brown eyes fell on her, and he smiled brightly.

" Heya, Bev. You look good. How was your summer? "

Gah, Beverly thought, I look good? I'm still short, relatively flat, and I have washed out purple hair.

But she was polite and smiley and replied, " It was okay, I mean, it was mainly just hanging out with those two lovebirds over there. " She jabbed her thumb in the direction of Beck and Grace, who seemed to not be aware of anyone around them until that moment.

Grace skipped over to her then, Beck's hand entwined with her's , dragging him along.

" Hey there, Roger! " Grace poked him in the side teasingly, " How are ya? "

Beck waved slightly to Roger, giving Bev a knowing smile.

" Brilliant. It's been a really long summer, and soon I'll be back to seeing you guys everyday. " He responded lightly, his gaze flicking to Bev.

Beverly, feeling rather awkward, murmured loud enough for them to hear, " I think I'm going to get something to drink, I'll see you guys in a few. "

Not letting her get away alone, Grace rushed to her side, " I'll go with you! "

Beverly smiled at her best friend brightly, glad to have her company. Whispering in Grace's ear, she exclaimed, " I think Roger hasn't changed a bit. "

Grace nodded knowingly.  Beverly let her brown eyes roam along the crowd of dancing people as they walked to the table where a rather large keg was centered, and a 24 pack of water. Not in the mood to get drunk and pestered by her grandmother or her parents, she took a water bottle and took a sip. Grace linked her arms with hers' and pulled her over to where Daina sat.

Daina was the sister of Neida. She had a head of curly waves, like her sister's red ones, but hers' were a shade of chestnut brown. She looked up and gave them a lazy smile while patting the ground next to her.

Bev always liked Daina, she seemed innocent, and slightly weird, but she was personable. Especially when you compared her to her ginger haired sister, who seemed to only care for boys, and popularity. Not exactly Bev's forte.

Grace and Beverly sat down on the soft ground, their legs kicked out in front of them. Bev started up conversation, " So, how was your summer, Daina? "

Daina offered a slight smile that wrinkled her nose, " It was okay. We mainly just did what Neida wanted. Shopping, Partying, Flirting. It was horrible. "

Grace chuckled.

Daina then exclaimed, " She, as in Neida, found another victim. You see that guy over there? The blonde one? She's been clawing at him all night. He's new. "

In fact, Bev had seen him. She flicked her gaze over and saw him, and caught her breath. He was gorgeous. Pale, blonde hair, soft green eyes, high cheekbones, sharp jaw line..

Grace exclaimed, " He is very handsome. "

Beverly nodded, her eyes on him, " Yes, I dare say he is. " A grin was pressed to her lips.
