The kitchen staff brought the food out and placed it before us. I thank the woman who put my plate in front of me.
A guy pours wine into the glasses on the table.
Mrs Parker looks at me. "It's good to see you again, Mikayla. When Landon called me and told me you were back together, I thought he was kidding." She smiles. "I can see that you still care about my son, and he still has feelings for you."
That's the longest sentence she's ever said to me.
Landon takes my hand, and I feel something in it. I look at the crumpled piece of paper in his hand. "I found this in the paperback you carry all over the place. It fell out of the book."
I open the paper and read: Dear Mikayla.
I put the paper on the table and turned to him. "Did you read it?"
He shakes his head. "I don't like reading things addressed to other people. You can talk to me about it once you've finished reading."
"No, I don't want to talk to you about anything, Landon."
Landon clears his throat and stands up. "Everyone, Mikayla and I are getting married on the weekend. We would like you to be witnesses." He turns to his father. "Dad, would you mind walking her into the room at the registry office?"
I rise and run out of the room with the crumpled paper.
Before the door shuts, I hear Grandmother. "Landon Xavier Parker, sit your arse in the seat."
I chuckle slightly as the door closes. I move towards the swinging chair and take a seat. I open the piece of paper again.
I read it:
Dear Mikayla,
We aren't your real parents. That's why we didn't leave any money for Juliet and you. The truth of how you became ours is, 'We stole you from your Birth Parents at a theme park.' I have no regrets doing it.
I want you to know that I couldn't have children, and when I saw you standing on your own at a theme park, I had the urge to take you home. So, that's what I did.
I wanted to love you like my child, but as soon as I brought you home, my husband hated having a child.
He got drunk all the time, and instead of taking his anger out on me, you were his target, and I want to apologise for that.
I have a list of things I should apologise to you for. I won't be doing that. What I will give you is the name of your birth parents.
Your birth parents are Mariana and George Lambert. That's all I'll tell you about them.
I want to end this letter with 'Your daughter is still alive. My husband sold her a couple of weeks before you gave Birth.'
As soon as I saw your daughter, I fell in love with her, and I couldn't let my husband hand her over to a stranger, so I took off with her.
I hope you have a great life, Mikayla, and you will find it in your heart to forgive me for the terrible things I've done to you.
Love
Mum
I have tears falling from my eyes.
I'm going to get my daughter back one way or another. You won't be able to hide from me now that I know you have my daughter.
