Chapter 1 - A Reunion and A Drink

Present

It was their first assembling after the first few months of Aurora living away from home to be closer to her university in London. She had done well in high school and college gaining mostly A’s. Aurora liked the London feel and felt like it was just right for her that time when she visited the university with Hazel. She had and was there every step of the way, making sure that Aurora would have everything she needed to get to where she was now. She had done everything right and now her younger sister was happy learning at Oxford university that had a great English department which was the subject Aurora was studying and learning a vast amount of skills from. However, the distance had put a strain on the girl’s relationship considering that they had little time to communicate now, since Hazel didn’t have the internet at home and Aurora’s calls were limited depending on how much money she had for credit. Sometimes Hazel would ignore Aurora’s calls, believing that she needed to give her sister more space and time to adjust and make friends. It seemed to be the best thing as Aurora went on about a girl named Sophie and a boy named Carl who she had a bit of a crush on. Hazel was glad for her, although she would never truly say that a part of her was green towards her sister and unhappy she couldn’t join Aurora or see her at least at the weekends. But they didn’t have money for that. Living off benefits was hard sometimes.

It was mid-day when Aurora had pulled up in a taxi from the airport and time seemed fattened on an orange sky. Hazel was straight out with her arms wrapped around her and Aurora’s around the now taller and curvier Hazel. She had remand small and less hippy. Aurora looked like her mother and the only difference that occurred was her eyes. The same eyes she shared with Hazel. The eyes she was glad she had. The eyes that said they were sisters. Looking into Hazel’s wide and full eyes now, she saw her own reflected. These velvet smoky black eyes that had a shine to them. They went nice against Hazel’s now black with a night blue strip in her hair that daggered around her face with her side fringe. She was prettier than Aurora remembered, or maybe it was because she just missed her so much or not seeing her in such a long time that she had forgotten how Hazel’s eyes looked when they had a shine of glee to them. The girls carried in the bags, paid the cab driver and now went out for a cup of coffee from Starbucks. Well, Hazel had an ice frappuccino with no caffeine in it. Aurora just got a normal coffee with three sugars in it.

“Three sugars? Guess you’re tired then.”

“Yeah. Travelling on a train for two hours can really knock the life out of ya. So, how’s or more where’s mum?”

It was the sudden stop of her icy drink making that growling scoffing sound when running up the straw, then the death glare of her eyes that burned right through her. The simple action was so effective. More than her hard eyes. That single stop. Everything seeming normal and silent, then the stopping of the lively packs of people that filled the coffee shop, brought in the cold breeze that not only came from the opening door that let in the cold winter air, but from that silence drew the heart stopping reaction of an unpleased Hazel.

“Out!”

She replied not with anger or any kind of emotion. But just a blunt answer that dropped the subject. After a while Hazel dropped her eyes down again and began to slurp her icy drink once again. It signalled the chance to try again. Only this time she wouldn’t dare step on an exploding stone.

“Hmmmm. So, how’ve you been doing then? I mean you’ve told me over the phone, but we’ve never really gone into full detail with saving credit and all.”

She lightened and with a fast pace began to speck about how she applied for jobs, but has got turned down from all. And how most of them didn’t even bother to send a message or anything about her not getting the job. She talked about the kids at the after school club that she volunteered for and started telling the tale of one that tried to bite her. She called the kid crazy which made her laugh. She also talked about this new guy that started volunteering there and how she’s finally started going out with somebody. But not on a date.
