Chapter 2: 18 Years Later

“Hey Ron, come here son” Dillard called from the garage. I ran up to him, wondering what he would want. When I walked in I noticed that door in the garage that no one ever goes into. Dillard say’s it is full of old dangerous junk and no one should go in.  But I still think there is something more to it. Some mysterious aspect that the door holds makes me fascinated.   

“Ronny, ask your mother if she wants to eat dinner at Deli’s tonight” Dillard continues.  “Yeah, I will text you when she answers” I said. “No, you could c’mon back here Ron, you got two legs kid”. Dillard had always had this unusual hatred for electronics.  If it was for him, we would have no computers, no phones, and no video games at our house.  Dillard and his wife Sally aren’t really my parents. Dillard said my real parents died when I was a baby, and their names were Richard and Rilesa. It would be so much better if I could actually see them…but a detailed explanation of them would be good too. Dillard says my father, Richard, was an amazing man…he said he had so much courage and strength that he could be able to rule a whole planet.  I don’t know much about my mother, except that she was as beautiful, like a queen. Dillard always compares them to a king and queen, I guess he had a lot of respect for them.

Anyhow, I responded to Dillard, “Okay, Dill Bill”. “Hey Ronald McDonald, its Dillard” he said as a comeback. I shook my head humorously then headed back to my room. I texted Sally to see if she was up for dinner at Deli’s; and of course she said yes.  We went to Deli’s almost every three days and honestly it was starting to get old. I mean the first time we went there I was five, and we have never stopped going.  I opened the front door yelling sarcastically, “Dillard, guess what, to our surprise Sally said YES!” He put a quick thumbs up above his head and then got quickly back to work on his old rusty Ford truck.

I started getting bored, Dillard was still acting like a mechanic, and Sally was working until eight at night. So I decided to give my girl friend Liana a call. “Hey babe, what’s going on with you” she asked when she picked up. “Nothing Lin Lin, just the usual”, I answered. “So, got plans for tonight?” she continued. “Yeah, kind of, back to Deli’s tonight” I said hesitantly. “Ron, couldn’t you skip it today, and spend some time with me?”She remarked. I looked out my window to make sure Dillard was still in the garage and not eaves dropping my conversation. Yeah, he did that sometimes, but to my surprise he was still there.  “I’ll see what I can do Lin Lin” I told her.  “Call me when you’re mind is made up baby, love you, muah.” Liana answered before hanging up.

Liana and I have been together for a while. Okay not really, we have been dating for about two months. But to be honest, I feel like I have known her for much longer.  I plan to bring her over this weekend so that she could meet Dillard and Sally. I‘m wishing they try to make a good impression on her. 

I remembered Lin Lin wanted me to skip dinner at Deli’s tonight, and I’m really considering it. I mean, I haven’t seen her in a whole week, and I want to spend more time with her.  I heard this weird hard stomping outside of my room, and then I realized it was Dillard that was coming up the steps.  Then, there was a slight knock on the door followed by a “Hey, Ron, you in here son?”  “Yeah, Come in” I answered. “Ronny Boy, you ready for some mean pumpkin pie tonight at Deli’s?” he asked.  I looked around trying to give him the hint of a “No not really”, but he looked at me like he was still waiting for an answer.  “Um, actually I was thinking maybe I would spend some time with Liana today” I continued. “So your skipping out Deli’s then?”  “Y Y Yeah, but I promise only ton…” “Say no more Ronny Donny, go have yourself some fun, but you gotta give me gum first” He approved cutting me off with a grin. “Okay I got a whole pack if you want it” I said while smiling. I knew he wasn’t mad at me or anything because he kept calling me different names. Dillard only calls me Ronald when he is mad at me or when something serious happened.  Anyhow, after he left the room I was so happy I was going to see Liana tonight, I mean, who wouldn’t be?
