Hiccup Haddock had to be one of the least-lucky guys he knew. But as he dragged himself down the hall after school, he had little idea of exactly what he was facing on the other side of the door to detention.
Stepping into the poorly lit classroom, Hiccup yawned. Looking around the space it became apparent that Hiccup, and another boy were only two unfortunate enough to receive detention on that particular day. Blinking hard, Hiccup made his way into the classroom.
On the black board at the front of the room a note from the teacher was lazy scrawled across the board with hard to read, yellow chalk. Hiccup could roughly make out 'stepping out' and 'will check on'. He smiled, realizing that Mr. Sanderson must've been the teacher in charge. Knowing that, it was unlikely that anyone would be checking on them.
With another tired sigh, Hiccup settled into one of the table near the windows. Hopefully there would be enough light to read without turning the lights on. He knew that if Mr. Sanderson were to check on them, he would just turn the lights off again. Resting his backpack on the table, Hiccup dug through until he uncovered his copy of 'The Catcher in the Rye' from English. He was suppose to be finished with the book by now, but after the first few chapter the book had just seemed to drag.
Hiccup and the other boy sat in silence for about a half-hour. Hiccup read his book, and only looked up once or twice at the other boy. He wasn't sure who the boy was exactly, but he had snow-white hair, and an almost translucent, sickly appearance. He was definitely older, and wore a simple blue hoodie and worn looking jeans.
After a while Hiccup heard a whistle from across he room. When that didn't work, the white-haired by tried something else. "Hey," he hollard, smiling. Hiccup looked up to see him wave a hand for the brown-haired boy to join him at the table. Eventually Hiccup actually did, moving to sit across from him at the other table. Parially just to shut him up.
A few minutes after Hiccup had joined him, the other boy kicked the unstable table with one of his feet, jarring Hiccup. "What are you in for?" He quizzed.
Hiccup swallowed hard and looked up from his book at the older boy. "I was- well... I started one of the science labs on fire." He blurted, deciding not to lie.
"No shit?" he laughed, leaning further back in his chair. "That was you?"
"It's not funny." Hiccup stammered, a hot-red blush beginning to fill his cheeks. "I could've burned down the school!" He felt his voice get louder, and maybe a little to harsh as he spoke, but decided not to care.
"Hey, alright. Calm down." Jack retorted, sitting up a little straighter and holding out a hand. "They name's Jack Frost."
"Really?" Hiccup quizzed.
"It's better than Hiccup Haddock." Jack mused, smirking.
Hiccup raised a brow, taking Jack's hand and shaking it lightly. "You know who I am?"
"You're the superintendent's son dude, of course I know who you are." Jack said matter-oh-factly. "If I had a dollar for every time I had to have a 'discussion' that your dad got involved in - well - let's just say I'd have a lot of extra change." With that, Jack stood up and stretched. His blue hoodie raised just slightly from his waist.
Hiccup's blushed turned a darker red, as he realized that Jack wasn't wearing a shirt under his hoodie. Hiccup turned his attention to the ground quickly, trying not to stare. "You alright?" Jack asked. Hiccup nodded, causing Jack to laugh again. "Dude, you look like you're gonna be sick."
"I'm fine," Hiccup replied a little to quickly, before leaving his chair. He walked across to the table where he'd dumped his backpack. Opening it, he scoured through it's contents. Eventually, he grabbed a random paper. It was an English assignment on The Catcher in the Rye, but it wasn't due for another week or so. Taking in a shallow breath, Hiccup grabbed his copy of the book along with the paper and moved back to sit near Jack again.
When he looked back at he other boy, Jack had turned his head to see the book. "You like J.D Salinger?"
"Not really," Hiccup confessed. "But it's for English... do you like to read?"
Jack laughed, but it sounded fake compared to the previous threw. "I guess so. A little. Why is that surprising?"
"I mean-"
"Hey," Jack said, cutting Hiccup off. "Let's just say I've got a lot of time on my hands. Besides, causing mayhem can't be my only talent." Jack winked, standing again. This time he was the one to cross the space. Standing over Hiccup's shoulder Jack ran his eyes across the assignment. A light smile crossed his lips. "That's easy," he tsked. The assignment was roughly just a personal essay, written to discuss symbolism, and the main characters emotional journey through the book. "I can't believe you don't like Catcher in the Rye."
"What do you mean?" Hiccup asked, turning in his chair to meet Jack's icy blue eyes.
"No offence Hiccup, but you strike me as the Holden Caulfield type." Hiccup laughed, surprising Jack. It was the first time he'd heard Hiccup laugh. It was light, and friendly, and utterly endearing. "Thanks I guess. I hope that's a good thing."
"Sure," Jack sighed, leaning in closer over Hiccup. He pretended to read the paper again, snatching it and running a hand against Hiccup's in the process. "What do you think?" He said, his tone sounded almost like a hum.
"What?" Hiccup asked. He jolted in surprise when Hiccup realized just how close Jack had become. Another blush began to light up his face as he leaned a little away from Jack. "I mean... wait, what were we talking about?"
"Never mind," Jack said, his voice still sounding a little heavy as he took a step away from Hiccup. A moment seemed to pass where Jack was trapped in thought, before the Jack reached for his own backpack. "Hey, this has been great Hic," He continued, swinging the bag over his shoulder as he headed for the door. "Anyway. I'll be seeing you around alright?"
Hiccup raised a brow, looking up towards the clock and then back a the boy in front of him. "Jack we still have forty-five minutes until detention is dismissed. Someone's bound to notice your absence."
"What's wrong Hic, gonna miss me." Jack quizzed sarcastically, causing Hiccup to roll his eyes. Jack tsked again, crossing the space to hold out a small piece of paper. Hiccup's eyes widened slightly at how close Jack came again. The boy's white bangs practically brushed Hiccups own brownish-red hair when he stopped, causing Hiccup to lean back a little in his seat.
Jack was close enough for Hiccup to detect the scent of pine needles that seemed to waft from the older boy. "Well if you're gonna worry that much I better give you this." He held out the thin, folded paper in front of him for a moment before placing it in Hiccup's hand.
Before Hiccup could take in another breath Jack was out of the room, the residence of another laugh echoing behind him. Hiccup took a relatively shaky sigh of relief before opening up the piece of paper. Written on it, with what appeared to be a blue gel-pen was a seven-digit number. Hiccup smirked, rolling his eyes again before tucking the paper into his back pocket.
-------- Author's Note: -----------
If anyone knows someone who does edits/fanart/whatever who wouldn't mind me using their art for the cover please let me know. I recently got a new laptop so I can't make my own covers anymore without photoshop.
If I can't find someone to do the cover it'll probably just be a doodle or something by me (and nobody want to see that trainwreck).
Anyway, I decided to try some HiJack because why not? I know I promised another 'Wanderlust' update but this ended up taking over my writing time today instead. I wrote it in one sitting though, so that makes me happy.
I don't know how long this story will be, but most likely it'll be relatively short. Thanks guys! <3
