Lukes POV

The car ride back was.. quiet to say the least. I didn't know what to say or how to say it. I mean, it was her first day and she hadn't exactly been thrilled with the school, let alone it's students.

I pulled up in her driveway and we just sat there for a minute or two.

Her dad pulled up and broke the silence.

"Penny! How was your first day? I can't say that my day was that good. The pigs were overly fed and when I confronted the master he just said, "You're a farm worker! You can't tell me what to do!" but everything's fine now, I'll secretly give those pigs half a meal every day!" Said Penny's dad laughing.

A farm worker? Penny's dad was a farm worker?

So that's why she was so sensitive on that topic.

After her dad gave the speech, Penny's face beamed red. I wanted to tell her that it was okay. I couldn't.

"Um.. Thanks... For the lifts and for waiting... For me and stuff..." Penny said to me briefly and then ran inside.

"Yeah, thanks Luke! It really helped me out." Said her dad. He seemed like a really kind guy. No wonder it seemed as if Penny loved him so much.

Penny's POV:

I couldn't belive it. Not only had my dad admit he was a Farm Worker, but he had admit it to the one and only MR POPULAR LUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!

It wasn't his fault he was a farmworker. But I just didn't want everyone knowing about it just yet. The only reason we lived in this huge house was because my mom let us use her house while she was living England where she was probably married to another guy living like royalty. We didn't know.

My parents aren't married. They never were, but they act like a married couple. My dad just never asked my mom to marry him. And I love him for that.

I could see my dad sitting on the chair from where i was perched on the staircase. I watched him get up and walk around the room sighing. He closed his eyes and as he did he walked right into a table.

The table wobbled wildly and then a gold plated vase fell off and smashed to the floor. The pieces were scattered all over the floor and under the furniture.

Now in normal families this wouldn't be a major train smash. For my family this is a lifetime crisis.

I ran downstairs and watched my dad swear under his breath. He never swore unless it was really bad.

I didn't know what to do. I couldn't believe my eyes. I slowly walked over to my dad and gave him a hug.

"It's okay dad, I'll work extra hard at the restaurant and earn a little more cash." I reassured him. I knew that me working hard at the restaurant wouldn't earn even a 10000000th of what this would cost.

The reason this whole incident was so big, was because my father and I just stayed in this house. Nothing belonged to us so if we broke, scratched, damaged, chipped,  whatever the case was, to something, we would have to pay for a new one or if it couldn't be bought again we would have to pay for the price it was worth.

This vase just happened to be the most expensive thing in our city, it used to belong to Dolly Parton and was her best ornament.

It was worth at least 1 million dollars.
