+The game had started several minutes ago and I could not have been more anxious. The tension in the atmosphere was suffocating and it suddenly became harder to breath. My hands were sweaty as I rubbed them together causing friction to stir and my hands to heat up. The night was chilly and I had dressed accordingly; two jackets and a hoodie along with my boots. North Carolina's winter was to be taken seriously.
To Lucas, this wasn't just another basketball game. Playing Nathan on the River Court, his safe haven, meant so much more. Him and his mom would finally be free of the constricting hold they held over them. No longer would they be victims to their endless torture.
"Oh! A 25-footer rips the silk like Jimmy Edwards in a size 3 dress." Mouth's voice pulled me from my thoughts as I watched Lucas make a shot. I chuckled at Mouth's comparison to Lucas scoring. He eased the tension if only by a little with his humor.
After the shot was made, it was like something finally settled in Nathan and he realized Lucas actually had a chance of winning. I could almost see the fear in his eyes. Almost. It disappeared as he angrily tossed the ball back to Luke and I faintly heard him say, "I'll give you that all night."
Whether my best friend replied back or not, I'm not sure. I was to busy watching the basketball fly through the air and make contact with the hoop. The people standing on the sidelines cheered and I joined them, clasping my hands around my mouth to let my voice carry further in the night.
The game picked up speed and the two distant half brothers were playing their hearts out, correction; Luke was playing his heart out. Nathan was running around showing off, dunking the ball every chance he had. His cockiness would be his downfall.
They went back and forth; Luke would make a shot then Nathan would turn around and do the same.
The two boys seemed to be playing fairly as my eyes danced around the court, following Luke's every move. I had spoke to soon though because just as Luke tried to block his dribble, Nathan elbowed him in the face taking the open shot.
I shot off the bench I had been occupying with Haley and clenched my fists at my sides as the crowd gasped. My sister was one thought ahead of me and yanked me back down. It was probably best she did.
"Don't make things worse. We don't need this getting out of hand." She calmly whispered to me but I could hear the worry hidden in her voice. All I did was nod and kept my eyes on Lucas, making sure he was okay. Anyone standing near me would probably witness steam coming out of my ears.
It didn't take a rocket scientist to see what Nathan did was no accident. He was a conniving bastard.
Luke leaned down, hands going to his knees to support his weight. Everyone watched closely as he breathed in deeply then stood to his full height. When I caught a glimpse of his face, I knew Nathan was in trouble. The determined look said it all. He would not be leaving this court without a victory.
With a shake of his head, Luke muttered, "No foul. Basket counts."
I was appalled. Lucas cant be serious. That asshole needed to be taught a lesson and I am sure my fist would be happy to do it for him.
Nathan smirked and backed away while the tall blonde shoved the ball in his arms and said, "Besides, you won't score again."
The honesty behind his words showed as Nathan tried to score but it was blocked by Lucas slamming his hand down on the basketball, stopping it's course into the hoop.
"Holy crap! Did you see that?! Someday men will write stories about that block. Children will be named after it. Argentinean women will weep for it." Mouth's voice faded as everyone watched the final moments of the game. We all were on the edge of our seats and I'm pretty sure I stopped breathing.
Nathans sidekick, Tim, was shouting at the sidelines along with the rest of his jock friends. The smirk on my face was uncontainable as I watched the frustration grow on Nathan's features. This was bringing me a new type of joy, knowing he was about to lose.
He got in Luke's face, determined to distract him with words that would hurt him. "He's never mentioned you, man -- not once in all these years."
Lucas stilled his movements, looking straight into his half brother's eyes, "This is for my mom."
He side-stepped around Nathan, dribbled down the side of the court and took the open shot. In that moment, it was as if time stopped. Everything went silent. No one spoke a word. I gripped Haley's hand from beside me and squeezed. Everyone's eyes were focused solely on that basketball making it's way to the hoop.
When the whooshing sound was finally heard indicating that the basketball had indeed made the shot, Haley and I jumped up, screaming at the top of our lungs.
He had won.
All of his friends rushed to him, congratulating him, praising him, anything of the sort. We all were so proud and I couldn't keep the smile off my face. It was contagious as Haley had the same smile upon her features.
My sister and I were lost in the crowd surrounding our best friend, waiting for people to clear out of the way. I couldn't contain my excitement as he made his way over to us.
His mouth opened but he couldn't get a word out because I had already tackled him in a bone crushing hug.
"I knew you could do it."
"Oh please, you looked like you were about to pass out the entire game." He laughed and brought his arms around me, returning the hug.
I heard Haley move towards us as she too joined the hug. "You should have seen her when you got hit in the face. I thought I was gonna have to hold her down."
"Shut up, Hales. I was worried about him." I said as I buried my head into his chest. He smelled of sweat and outside but I didn't care.
My two friends laughed but never responded. Instead we all stood in a circle, hugging each other.
In was in this moment that I realized something; these two amazing people were all I ever needed in life. As long as I had them, I would be forever content. Nothing could ever bring me down because they would bring me back up. They were my entire existence and I loved them with all my heart. I could count on them for anything and they would always be there.
Oh how foolish I was.
