16 year old Dan Howell was your typical teenage boy. He was loud and he got in trouble lots and he partied all night every night and he'd slept with every person who consented (CONSENT IS IMPORTANT KIDS) to him in his form. (And the form above)
Except he wasn't. Dan Howell also liked "obscure" bands, had "emo" hair and played video games when he wasn't out partying. The biggest difference he had to most other boys in his form was the fact that sometimes he didn't feel like a boy; maybe we'll get around to that later, though, when Dan feels comfortable thinking about it.
One day, after a particularly chaotic night at a party hosted by some girl he didn't know, Dan Howell lands himself in detention. Admittedly, it's not his first time, but this particular detention is special. No, he doesn't finally have a revelation about his loud ways; he meets a boy. This boy also has "emo" hair, and Dan can see on his bag, a keychain with the logo of one of his "obscure" bands. And oh look- the bag is branded, displaying the logo of one of Dan's favourite video games.
To be fair, Dan didn't really "meet" the boy until a class several weeks later, but he does stare at him from afar as the bored teacher drones on about how the kids' behaviours were affecting others, yadda yadda yadda.
Somewhere during rollcall at the start of detention, Dan sees the boy respond with a small noise to the name "Phil Lester". He recognises the name, from when he was new in his Bio class, but he doesn't recognise the face. It's probably (definitely) because the day that Phil Lester was introduced to the rest of his Bio class, Dan was busy graffitiing the table he was sat at, and he didn't even look up as Phil walked past him to sit nearer to the back of the room.
Oh well. He knkws his face now. He knows it in incredible detail, too, because when he gets home he Facebook stalks Phil Lester and stares at his face for two hours before he's called down to dinner. After dinner, Dan goes back upstairs to his room and, in a moment of sudden inspiration, paints Phil Lester from memory. At about 12a.m., Dan realises that he's been painting for four hours and has missed a party hosted by a girl called Maddie who he vaguely remembered from his English Lit. class. Dan shrugs and texts his friend Charlie that he'd gotten distracted and had subsequently not made it to the party. Charlie responds with a series of emojis and something about a guy called Chris who he should totally come down and meet. Dan ignores this, feeling tired after standing and painting for four hours, so he gets into his jimjams and slips into bed. (Dan called his pajamas jimjams because otherwise it reminded him of a previous boyfriend called PJ who he still sorta missed) (Also bc that's what I, the author, call them, but oh well)
As soon as Dan's head hits the pillow, he... is suddenly wide awake. What a long night lay ahead for poor Dan Howell.
