Chapter 1: Snowflakes and Letters

One morning I was sitting down scrolling through my texts on my iPhone. The case was green and had a cartoon cookie saying "Eat More Cookies!"  I started to play slither.io. After gaining 2000 points I was eaten by a snake named Raa2245. "AUGH!"I yelled in frustration.  Storm clouds were spreading in the sky near my window. I sighed. The weather seemed dismal, like my mood. Figures, I thought. I hear a rap-rap rap on my window and smile. That's a code. i open the window to see my pet squirrel, Oliver, with a nut. I laugh and he jumps in and sits on my shoulder. I open my desk drawer and take out a bag of walnuts and cashews. Oliver jumps in the bag and starts to eat. I laugh and take him out of the bag. I give him the bag and he drags it off to his nest by his teeth. I close the window and start to brush my hair.  "Verona, can you come down and get the mail?" My mom shouted from downstairs. "OK!" I shouted back. I put down the brush and put on my white slippers and walked out of my room. I clomped down the stairs. I opened the door to a wintery world. Snow stuck to my cabin porch and I walked on the crunchy snow to the mailbox. I opened the mailbox and grabbed the mail. I hurried back inside and looked through the mail. Bills, bills, Ooh, Teen Vogue, bills, Lands End, Orris,Lego... No mail. I'm so disappointed. They should've sent it by now.  I texted my friend Alexandra-

veronahill: No letter from the school. :( 

alexfox: don't worry it's bound to come soon! Did Liz get hers yet??

veronahill: idk- one sec

      I open up a new conversation on my iPhone.

veronahill- did u get your letter yet??

lizmuffin- not yet. Why does it take so long?! U know how I'm impatient...

veronahill- they're not sure, i suppose.

lizmuffin- they better get sure! Im done with waiting!

veronahill- stand down. alex hasn't gotten hers yet either.

lizmuffin- gotta go feed my cat Puddles. Wanna know how he got his name? 

veronahill- that's a story i do not want to hear. :P

lizmuffin-ha-ha. bye.

I guess no more talk from Liz. That's so like her to end a conversation quickly. She's one of my oldest sphere friends. So's Alex. Our parents pooled us together because humans just don't understand ( no offense to the readers)  Liz and Alex live near me and go to my school. Liz is a Heat Sphere and  that means she's prone to annoyance. You think a Weather Sphere and a Heat Sphere wouldn't get along but  Liz and I have the best times, pulling pranks on humans and teachers. Our most favorite victim is the janitor. We put water under him and make him slip. It's  hilarious.  Now we are mature adults and we don't do that anymore. Well, I don't. We have our spiritual animals and then we have pets to be with at home. We can't leave or abandon our spiritual animals for more than four months or they die and the species is in danger.

 Lizzy's spiritual animal is a porcupine- named Frulu- and she is not affected by his poisonous needles. Liz loves science and is interested in poisonous venoms and healing.   Alex does not approve of our shenanigans with the janitor, but she is from a family of 6- her mom, her dad, her, her 2 sisters and one brother. She is always doing homework and reading. I like reading too. Alex's spiritual animal is an owl (Odysseus)  and she lets him stay at nighttime when her family's asleep. She's the only one out us without a normal pet. Alex is a Land sphere and she likes planting trees. She's a real bookworm and we are study buddies.  

Anyway, we all want to go to this new academy in New York. I forget what it's called, but I'll know it when I see it. You get to hunt down and track evil. You are like a spy, and when Liz heard that, she said immediately - "I want a grappling hook." I said, "No, if anything, I get the grappling hook and you get the stun gun." She and I argued until Alex said-"you can both get grappling hooks!" She tends to break up fights. But I might not even get in. it's so stressful. My mom and dad will be sad if I go, because its a boarding school. But I'll be with Alex and Liz, so it'll be ok. They want me to go, but they're doing weird stuff- like treating me to lots of movies and ice cream. I'm not complaining, but I guess they want me to spend more time with them before I MIGHT go. But, seriously. I'm coming back for the holidays so,chill. 

I text Alex

veronahill- what's up? 

alexfox- visiting  Odysseus' nest. U should too. we can still transport ourselves to visit but Crystal might miss u more, being in NY

veronahill- i guess so. going now-brb

Alex's right. I pull on my furry snow boots and go outside into the crisp air. My parents trust  me, so I don't have to tell them when I go out. I enter the forest and admire the scenery. A little raccoon is scurrying away from the forest. Hmm. Weird. Oh well. I wave hello to the squirrels in the trees. they don't come out to say hello today. I climb a big hill to the top. The trees are covered in snow and I see Crystal's cave. I run to it and enter. "Crystal, it's me,  Verona!" I hear a low growling. That doesn't sound like my snow leopard. She meows like a kitten. I turn my head and a black, huge, menacing bear is entering the cave! "AUGH!" I scream and summon my powers underneath all of that fear. A blast of ice shoots out from me and hits the bear in the forehead.I fall backward and see the bear is blocking the only exit. It groans in agony, then roars angrily, jaws open and menacing. Oh no, I wonder suddenly with horror. Where's Crystal??
