To the River

Chapter One- Gone

Scott's POV

"Come on, Mitch!" I yelled to my best friend as I ran across the grassy field.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" He yelled back. He picked up speed to try to catch up with me and my long legs. "Why do you have to be so tall and fast?" He complained. I laughed and walked a bit faster. "Come on!" He pleaded behind me.

We continued to walk across the field until we got to the trees. I pushed through, making sure I didn't whack my small brunette friend with a stick. We finally broke through, and where greeted by the magnificent river. I took off my shirt, baring my large pecs. Mitch did the same, showing his bare chest.

I looked at the rushing river, noticing it was a little higher than last year. Oh well, I'll still be tall enough. I stuck a toe in, and then slid into the chilly water. A bit colder than I expected.

I watched as Mitch sat on the edge and stick his feet in, as he did every single year. Every year we came here on the first day of summer break. And every year is was the same: I played in the water while Mitch just sat at the edge.

*Flashback*
"C'mon Mitchie! I have to show you!" I exclaimed as I pulled him along.

"Where are we even going?" He asked, seeming worried for no reason.

"Let me show you!" I tugged him along, past the trees, and to the huge river I had found a couple days before.

"Look! A huge river!" I said, opened my arms to indicate how big it was.

"Wow! That IS big! We should come here every year and swim!" He smiled at the idea, as did I.

"Yeah! Wanna jump in with me?" I asked, walking closer to the edge of the water.

"Well... Um, I'm not sure... I'm kinda afraid of water," my 10 year old friend (at the time) rubbed the back of his neck.

"That's fine, maybe next year!" I shouted as I splashed into the water.

*End of Flashback*

Now, 7 years later, he still hasn't come in with me.

"Scott, I'm gonna go mark the tree," Mitch called, pulling his legs out of the water and going over to the tree, where a small blade lay. He picked it up and scratched away some of the bark. 7 marks. 7 years of friendship.

He came back over and went to his original spot, legs dangling in the water. I decided to play our normal water game. It had no name, and it really wasn't a game, but it was fun. I went under the water, and got a big mouthful of the river water. I came back up, cheeks puffed out, looking for my target.

"Oh no you don't!" He screeched and got a handful of water. But before he could do anything, I spat everything in my mouth out at him, a constant stream. When all the water was out, I was laughing hysterically. He just pouted and stared at the water. I lifted myself up into the land next to him.

"What's wrong?" I asked, swinging my arm around his shoulders.

He took a deep breath. "I-I want to go into the water," he said, obviously being serious. But I didn't see the seriousness.

I burst out laughing. "After SEVEN years, you want to jump in! Ha, if only!" I smiled, but saw he still had a straight face. "Wait, you're serious, aren't you?" I said, mentally slapping myself for laughing. He nodded very slightly.

"Well, follow me," I said, taking his hand, trying to make up for laughing. I slid in, Mitch trailing behind me. I hear a quiet splash, and knew he was in with me. I popped up, and soon afterwards, him. I was proud of him, for being so brave.

"You can let go know," He said, loosening his grip.

"Are you sure?" I needed to make sure he was ok. But, he nodded, and I let go, slowly. He stayed in his place.

"Let's go!" I exclaimed, and went underwater to get a nice gulp. I popped back up and he was still there. And there I was, chipmunk Scott. I let it fall out of my mouth, and squinted. Was he ok? He was just kind of standing there, staring at nothing. Suddenly, he snapped out of it, shook his head, and made eye contact with me.

"Do you want to go to deeper water?" He asked. I was taken aback. He really wanted to this? All in one day? I shrugged, and nodded, and went for his hand.

"No, I want to do this by myself," my best friend pulled away. I was hurt, but didn't say anything. We drifted towards the center of the river. My spirits lifted again when I saw he was comfortable.

"What do you want to do now?" I asked.

"Uh... I don't know? I'm actually kind of chilly," He shivered.

"What to get back to land?" I asked, glancing to see how far we were from it.

"Yeah," Mitch shivered again. I started back, not thinking about checking on him. The next few moments happened in slow motion.

"Ow!" I heard from behind me. My head whipped around, only to see my best friend, my only friend, being taken by the river. Downstream he was swept, not a word from his mouth.

My friend. My one friend. Taken. By the thing that marked our friendship. The river. No one could ever feel the fury that I felt when my partner was swept away.
