3 days.

That is precisely how long they had been imprisoned on this island.

The girl, Ahlia, had not awoken yet. She lay still upon the wet sand and was  deaf to any sound whatsoever. She seemed like she was in a deep, peaceful sleep and no one could wake her.

The boys had watched her cautiously for the first day, but then became intrigued with the island that in-captured them.

But still, out of the 25 boys who were on this so called 'island' none had found any courage to go venture into the forest, which was curved along the beach in a boat shape of way. Trapping them on the sand, to remain as slaves to the sun.

The tall skinny one, who's name was Jack Merridew kept a careful watch on  Ahlia, making sure that none of the littluns started doing anything mischievous around her, like covering her in sand or putting crabs in her hair, which they had already attempted doing.

They had, (on a positive note) found coconuts hanging low on the palm trees which scattered over the beach.
These quenched their thirst, but coconut water was not nearly enough to sustain a healthy diet. So today, the boys were going to take a look in the forest, but they were to stay in a group, and if anyone managed to get lost, to scream as loud as they could until someone rescued them.

Ralph, the one who had discovered the conch and brought all the boys together was busy. Busy trying to start a fire with nothing but rocks and decaying branches. Busy trying to keep a watch on the littluns in case they wondered alone in the forest and didn't find their way back. Busy making sure that Jack Merridew didn't do anything odd around Ahlia.

The fat one nicknamed Piggy was also overwhelmed with work. Trying to remember the names of the all the boys and keeping a careful eye on the conch. Which he felt very worried about, in the hands of Ralph.

Every now and then he would speak  nervously,

" Be careful with that conch"
Or
" The um, the conch... Be careful."

Ralph took no notice of this as he was so confused in his own world he to worry about anything else.

Occasianally, Ralph would stop and stare at the girl Ahlia, seeing how intently Jack was watching her.

He felt uncomfortable by this and quickly busied himself with this new reality. An island, without adults, or nagging teachers, where everything could be fun and games.
But Ralph knew that they had to be rescued, otherwise, they would never get out of this place and eventually...

Grow old and...

Die.

He dreaded the word death or any term related to it.

That is why he had taken upon himself and the the help of a few older boys, to create a fire. The smoke would travel up towards the sky, signaling any near by ship that they were in need of rescuing.

"Aye Ralph, look at this!" Piggy called excitedly from the edge of the water, just where the waves were starting to become small and helpless.

Ralph jogged over to where Piggy was standing and looked down.
He spotted two large chunks of aircraft, floating calmly over the top of the water.

Ralph examined them cautiously.
" They must've been swept in by the tied when the plane crashed."

He looked at the debris which had begun to appear on the side of the chunk.

" Has the girl woken yet?" Piggy asked in a concerned tone, snapping Ralph out of his odd trance.

" No... unfortunately."

His gaze wandered over to the far side of the beach, where Jack was by her side, looking right back at him.

Ralph broke eye contact and glared back towards the sea, which was a royal blue from where he was standing.

"Come on," he shouted, walking briskly away from Piggy, who was staring at him  confused, " I'm calling a meeting."

Ralph rushed over to where three large tree trunks met, in a sort of a triangle shape, only the edges didn't meet and their were quite large gaps between each trunk.

He lifted the conch and a memory popped into his head. He and Piggy had found on the first day, and he had taught Ralph that by practically spitting into it, it would make a loud bellowing sounds. He blew into it, making a thundering blow that could be heard from yards away.

Boys came scattering from every direction and began seating themselves on the trunks. Even Jack left his perch next to Ahlia and sat next to Ralph, who he watched eagerly.

Ralph lowered the conch from his lips and spoke in a casual tone, making sure to have good eye contact with the audience, well, boys, in whom he was about to speak to seriously to.

"Okay everyone, settle down please." The muffles and whispers silenced and Ralph could hear the wind whistling through the trees behind them.

" As you all know, we have been on this island for three days. Three days with barely anything to eat, drink and almost no shelter to protect us from rain, hail or shine."

The boys nodded solemnly in agreement, eager to hear what Ralph had to say next.

" What I think, is that we need a chief."

" Yeah a chief!"
"Like an adult to look after us all."
"Someone strong and smart!"

Littluns shouted ideas and older boys nodded and talked among themselves, agreeing immediately with what Ralph said.

" Quiet please!" Ralph called over the fuss that was being made.

"We shall have an election. Right here, right now." Jack interrupted, flashing a proud smile at the group.

" How about Jack? He's the oldest!"
Someone called from the furthest trunk.

"I think Ralph, he found the conch!"
"Yeah! Ralph! He got us all together!
" I think Ralph should be chief."

Slowly, the name Ralph begun being chanted and Jack flushed. Feeling embarrassed at how little people had called out his own name.

"I guess you won the election." He spoke, holding out his hand toward Ralph.

Ralph accepted it gratefully and gave him a sheepish grin.

Suddenly, a faint voice called out,
" Who won the election?"

All eyes turned to see the girl, Ahlia, standing in her damp uniform with a look of confusion on her face.
