Laurie led her to the alley as he watched her from the corner of his eyes. She usually held him by his arms on such occasions but today she did not and he did not complain. Something told Jo that the dreaded moment was about to come. Suddenly Laurie came to an abrupt stop, looked into her eyes, held by her arms and was about to ask Jo what she had feared for long when she stopped him , "Laurie, don't ! Please don't. You know my answer. There is no need of saying it. Please don't say the words."
"why Jo? You know I have to say it. I can't take it anymore."
"Laurie! I love you dearly but not in the way you want me to. Oh! Don't. Please don't." She looked away for she did not want to hurt the feelings of her dear Teddy with whom she had spent capital times.
"Jo I've loved you since the day I met you .I wanted to tell you how I felt but you would not let me."
"Oh Teddy please don't make me hurt your feelings. You know my answer."
" Why Jo?won't you love me, can't you love me?"
Jo had tears in her eyes by now and she left Laurie for she could take no more. He knew what that meant. Laurie stood there thinking about the times that they had spent together.
