"Come on sis, it's time to go, we're going to be late!"
"Alright I'm ready, get in the car Kevin!"
My brother and I rushed out of the house at 7:15 that morning. Why were we leaving our house so early during the middle of the summer? This week was Band camp.
Kevin and I barely made it to the band room by 7:30 in time to meet the new members. Since we were both band council officers, him being the freshman representative and myself being the vice president, we had to make sure we arrived before everyone else showed up at 8. We also had to make sure that all the new people were properly registered and got on the right bus next to their paired buddy (either a band council officer, or a returning upperclassman).
By around 7:55 am, we, as well as the rest of the Band Council, had gotten everyone paired up, and lined up to go into one of three buses. The new members were sent off first. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to register my partner; I was anxious to meet her. I hoped that she'd be nice, and that it'd be easy enough to get along with her.
"Okay everyone else, let's go!" our director said, sending all the remaining members off to meet their partners on the bus.
I climbed into the bus to meet my buddy. When I first saw him, I sighed in slight disappointment as I realized that not only was he not a freshman, but he was also probably in my year as obvious by the aura of arrogance about him. He had on a pair of shades, and long bleached blonde hair that covered his face and went down nearly to his shoulders. He seemed a little odd, but I had to sit next to him for the next hour, so I reluctantly took the seat next to his.
"Hi, I'm Kellie," I said, turning to him, smiling warmly. No response. Maybe he didn't realize I was talking to him. This time I nudged his shoulder a little bit. "Hi, it's nice to meet you. My name's Kellie Duong."
"Yeah, I heard you. Don't talk to me," he grunted back in reply, while continuing to text rapidly to some unknown person.
"Okay... well I kind of have to talk to you, and let you know of how band camp is going to work-"
"Not interested, I'm busy."
Well yeesh, someone clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
"Well if you don't want to talk then that's fine but at least-"
"Look chick, I'm busy right now so leave me alone, will you," he said, clearly annoyed now.
I wonder what crawled up his ass and died, I mean seriously. All I wanted to do was give him the new member protocol. He didn't have to be so stupid about it.
"Fine but you better read this," I muttered, dumping a pamphlet I had spent the time making for whomever my buddy would be on his lap.
He responded to that by immediately picking it up, crumpling it up, and throwing it behind him to the far end of the bus. Then he smirked at me before returning to his stupid texting. Oh it was so on.
As soon as we arrived, I left to go greet people in. Once everyone got situated, the band director had the president and me give a quick speech to the new members.
"Hello everyone, I'm Drake Colton, your Band President,"
"And I'm Kellie Duong, your Vice Band President,"
"And welcome everyone to Band Camp!" we said in unison, as everyone applauded.
"As you all know, this year we have 150 members signed up for band, 60 of which are new members. That means that we all have to put extra attention towards learning our placing for our field show!" Drake said, starting out.
