I laid on the cot in Al's hospital room. I hadn't realized how late it was until I heard a clock strike midnight somewhere. So I closed my eyes.
"Brother?"
"Yeah." I replied.
"Are you awake?"
"No."
"What are we going to do now? Getting our bodies back has been our dream for so long, I don't even know what I want now." Al confided. I gasped at his sudden question.
"I'm going home."
He smiled, "You've never called it home before, Brother." I moved my arms behind my head, looking at the ceiling.
"Don't get all sentimental on me now, Al."
He laughed. "I'm not, I'm just surprised is all. Winry wouldn't have any thing to do with it, would it?" I could hear the tease dripping from his question.
"Maybe it does." I stated simply. Two can play at this game, Al.
He gasped excitedly and jumped out of bed. "You like her! I knew it!"
I rolled my eyes. "Shut up would ya! Besides she doesn't feel the same." I sat up slowly.
"How would you know Brother? You've never asked her."
I looked down and I sorta chuckled.
"What's so funny, Brother?"
I looked at him, "I don't have alchemy anymore, Al. What is she gonna think of me? I used to think I could solve all the worlds problems with alchemy. It's been my life for so long, I don't know what I'm gonna do without it. What am I without it?"
Al smiled. Now that he had his body back and I had mine, I didn't have a plan for us. This is what we've always wanted, and yet I still felt apprehensive. What would she think of me now that it's all over?
"Ed?"
I was still laying on my back. "Yeah, Al?"
He smiled wider. "What if I told you, that we could get your alchemy back? All that time in this hospital this past month I've been reading. And the Xingese-"
I chuckled.
"No thanks, Al," I interrupted, "Been down that road twice now and I don't want to go back down it again. With Mom and our bodies. I'm gonna do something else now. Maybe I'll be a doctor, like Marcoh. A lot of people have helped us over the years. Maybe it's time to help some other people now. Equivalence, right? Maybe I'll stay with military and be a doctor."
He frowned. "Brother, you quit being with the state when we were running from the military in Lior. Your watch..."
"Speaking of which. Where is my watch? I don't know where it is!"
He chuckled nervously, "Well Scar's arm absorbed the stones inside it and the watch is well, lost somewhere in Lior."
My face sank. "Oh right. That bastard put stones in my watch!" I muttered.
Al chuckled. "Well maybe we can go find it! Or Colonel Mustang is probably going to be Fürer! We can get him to make you a new one!"
I rubbed my chin thoughtfully. I didn't have alchemy anymore. Being a State Alchemist would be pretty hard without having it. But, I suddenly remembered something.
"I just remembered, I have a debt to repay." I said calmly and got up.
"What are you talking about, Brother?"
"I have to give Mustang 520 cens. I'll be back in a little while. Stay here, don't get into any trouble. You're not metal anymore, not indestructible like you used to be." I joke.
He laughs. "I guess not."
And I turn to leave, "See yah in a bit, Al." I put my arm up and wave back to him without turning towards him and walk out the door. And towards the bank.
