*Hermione's P.O.V*
Hermione somehow managed to find a carriage alone and after dumping her trunk on the seat opposite she sat and, as she often did, contemplated life.
Thinking back to her and Ron's relationship she felt a warm happy feeling buzz through her. She stared out the window as she thought back to all the happy memories she had with Harry and Ron, and it made her miss them, and, though it was her own choosing to not go and see them, she imagined herself sitting with Luna, Neville, Harry, Ron and Ginny a few compartments down. Ginny; she had been through so much, losing Fred and all, Hermione should be down there comforting her, making sure she's alright. But then she thought about all she herself had been through in the last year and was instantly reminded of the pain caused by love, by trusting and relying on people.
She semi-consciously pulled up her left sleeve and ran her fingers across the still slightly bleeding wounds. Mudblood. That's all Hermione will ever be. she thought to herself. Then the sound of the compartment door sliding open interrupted her sentimentally-depressed phase. She looked up and saw none other than Draco Malfoy, Death-Eater-and-coward extroadinaire.
She had already stop fiddling and trying to wipe some of the blood residue off her arm, but realized when she saw Malfoy look down at her arm that she hadn't pulled her sleeve down. As he gaped wide eyed at what had been done to her. When she saw his half shocked, half pitying and disgusted expression, she thought to herself, let him look, he should be ashamed of himself he just stood there and watched.
'Yes, Malfoy?' She asked in a no-nonsense tone.
'Um, M-Mcgonagall wants to see y-you.' He stuttered out still eyeing my arm.
I pulled down my sleeve and got to my feet, brushing past him out of the carriage towards the office-like compartment I knew Mcgonagall would be in. I stopped and turned when I heard footsteps following me.
Turning and coming face to face with Malfoy I said a little harshly,'Is there a reason you are following me?'
'She asked to see me aswell.' He replied with a shrug hinting that he didn't know what was going on either.
I too shrugged nonchalantly and continued on. We arrived at McGonagall's compartment a minute later and I knocked tentatively on the door.
I heard a muffled, 'Come in,' and proceeded through into the large room. Headmistress Mcgonagall sat at her desk writing a note on a peice of parchment.
'Please sit, Miss Granger and Mr Malfoy,' and she conjured two chairs, 'Now this year, as you know, the board and myself at Hogwarts have decided to reopen the school to the previous seventh years who missed out due to the, uh, war. As part of this we have decided to elect a Head Girl and Head Boy from the previous group of students. Those two positions, I have decided, will be filled, by you.' She gestured to us.
'Now as part of the Head positions you will be acquisited with your own dorms and a shared common room for prefect meetings, organising events, etc.' She clapped her hands in an air of finality and stood grabbing the badges from a draw in her desk and handing them to Hermione and Malfoy.
Now most people would think that Hermione would be super pissed about having to share a common room with Draco Malfoy.... and she was! I mean this was really bad luck. However, on the other hand she wouldn't have to face the worried glances and sympathetic patronizing from peers and friends about why she looked, well, let's just say Hermione knew that she looked terrible. And she obviously wouldn't have to deal with sympathy from Malfoy so no issues there!
She grabbed her badge with a curt nod to McGonagall and Malfoy and began to make her way back to her compartment, however before she could leave McGonagall held up a hand and said,'Just a minute Miss Granger, you and Mr Malfoy will need to go to the prefects compartment and work out a roster for patrol shifts, to be done in pairs, beginning at 11pm and finishing at 12:30am. That's all.'
*Draco's P.O.V*
I was explaining to Pansy that our relationship was over when a fourth year Hufflepuff came to the compartment asking me to fetch Granger and meet Mcgonagall at her office, Granger in tow. I sighed and walked along the train to checking in the compartments. When I got to the last ones I saw Granger sitting the looking down at her lap. Confused I opened the squeeky comartment door without knocking and strode in with a smirk, however it was wiped off my face when I saw that she was previously examining the word Mudblood etched into her skin for what looked like the second time. I stood stock still staring wide eyed at her arm. I glanced at her face and saw her defiant expression, obviously pleased at my dicomfort. All I could do was stare with a mix of sorrow and revulsion at what my Aunt Bellatrix Lestrange had done to her. In that instant I opened my mouth to apologize but was snapped out of my trance by Granger pulling down her sleeve to cover the sore.
'Yes, Malfoy?' She asked in what I could describe as an impatiant tone.
'Um, M-Mcgonagall wants to see y-you.' I stuttered. A look of satisfaction crossed her face before it was quickly replaced by the emotionless state it was originally in. After some confusion we arrived at Mcgonagall's carriage where we were told of our positions and our shared living space. I looked over at Hermione and saw her face still emotionless, yet I could feel the cogs turning in her head. She stood to leave after a curt nod to me and the Headmistress, in which time I noticed the bags under her eyes and the deep blue circles that stretched to her high cheek bones which I knew very well were caused by nightmares. I couldn't imagine what perfect little Granger with her perfect little life and perfect muggle family would possibly have to dream about compared to me. I had dreams every single night where I relived the night on the astronomy tower, yet every time it was a different person and every night I killed them instead of Snape. After being told of our duties we went to the prefect's compartment and sorted the night time patrols. We sorted the prefects into pairs and created a roster, well I did it with little help from Hermione who stared out the window, her brow creased and obviously deep in thought. This was going to be a long year.
