The sun was almost done setting and I was almost up the hill. I saw red and blue lights flashing in my drive way. I started to sprint.
"What's- going- on?" I managed to asked between breaths. "You must be Ever." The officer said. He had a name tag that said 'Officer Glenn Howard'. "Yes?" I answered. "Your mother is being taken to jail for," he paused taking out his notepad. "2 speeding tickets, 3 unpaid parking fines, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license." He finished.
I gaped. How could my mother have done all that. "Where am I going?" I muttered. "We have managed to get ahold of your father-" he started, but I stopped him. "My father!?" I exclaimed.
My father walked out on me and my mother when I was 7 and every once in awhile he send me a letter lying and saying he misses me and wants to see me soon. I can't believe he chooses now to show up.
"Yes your father. He will not be able to fly out here till tomorrow evening so we are going to ask you to stay with one of the officers. Her name is Caroline she is a police investigator and a foster mom." He explained. I didn't know what to say.
"Please go inside pack what ever you will need for school tomorrow and come back out." He instructed. I took a deep breathe before going inside. So I'm going to stay in a foster home? I thought. How could this happen. I don't care that my moms going to jail she deserves it, it's my dad I'm worried about.
I grabbed an old duffle bag and filled it with multiple pairs of clothes just in case, my make up and other things like tooth brush deodorant and brushes. I gently pulled the dream catcher I made out of my pocket and put it in there too.
"I'm ready." I said to the officer. "Okay Ever meet Caroline." He said gesturing to the woman beside him. She was tall with red hair and green eyes. She had a narrow jawline and high cheek bones. She had white teeth and a welcoming smile. She looked nice but I still was upset about leaving.
"Nice to meet you Ever. I'm sorry this is happening but it's for the best." I nodded. "We'll let's get going." She nodded and led me to her small red car. "So it's just for one night right?" I asked. "Yes, I will try not to bug you or make you feel uncomfortable either." She assured. "Thanks." I mumbled under my breathe.
We pulled up to her house. It wasn't too big and wasn't too small. It was a white house with a cherry red door and red shutters. A small flower bed bordered the house with yellow and pink tulips.
"Oh thank god your him Caroline, these kids are out of control." A man said. He was tall and bulk with a couple gray hairs in his brown mesh. He had bags under his eyes and looked exhausted. "Relax." She said. "I've got it from here." She assured him.
"Rudy! Maggie! Barrett!" She called. Three little kids showed up. I wasn't sure which was Rudy or Barrett but they looked alike. Maggie was the smallest with short brunette pig tails on either side of her head. She was missing one if her front teeth and looked so cute.
"This is Ever, she will being staying her for tonight only, be nice and go get into pajamas." She said and they filed up the stairs in a perfect line and not a word was said. "Wow. They are well behaved." I commented. "Well they don't want to mess with me." She teased.
We went upstairs and she led me into an empty bedroom it contained a single bed, a dresser, a small tv, and a tiny bathroom. "This will be your room tonight." She told me. "Okay." I replied setting my bag on the bed.
